      Thanks.

I made a MetroBank account before I left the UK and use that to withdraw my cash from the UK.

Rates are only just slightly less than xe.com and they don't charge you for foreign withdrawals.

Which you can get near any vaguely-major train station anyway.

"Dangerous" areas of Japan are like regular areas of major western cities.

Roppongi hills is nice though, awesome cinema there.

Roppongi is a bit of dump but you can have a lot of fun, one of my fondest memories of Japan was working at Gas Panic in Roppongi, doing a 4pm-5am shift on a Saturday night, going to club 99 afterwards to get drunk, going to a place called the chicken man for chicken fried rice and then crashing at an internet cafe to sleep for a few hours with a load of salarymen who had been out all night also. If you like bars and clubs Roppongi is/was a pretty good place to go.

Roppongi also has an amazing tsukemen restaurant called Tetsu-something.

Tsukemen being, basically, ramen where the noodles and thicker-than-normal soup come in separate bowls and you dunk the noodles in the soupy goodness.

              Mmmmm...soupy goodness...

Slightly the inverse of what this thread is about, but does anyone know the cheapest way to get a return ticket from Japan back to the UK? I'm very flexible on date, I'm just thinking I should probably visit home at some point. The tickets I've seen so far have been prohibitively expensive.

Cross your fingers and hope? Try booking from a UK site.

@Jay: I seem to remember being unable to withdraw money at post office ATMs if the UK banks were closed at the time. Had no problem using Citibank ATMs any time of day so would recommend adding those to your map. I don't recall using 7-Eleven's ATM...

Thanks. Luckily there was a Citibank bang next to our hotel so we had no problems withdrawing money.

Once I've mustered the energy to sort through the hundreds of photos on my camera, I'll post some up

Thanks everyone for their advice. We had an amazing time.

Wrong and wrong, Roppongi hills is really nice, with nice museums and probably the best cinema in Japan. Kabukicho is good for the love hotels, providing you have someone to go with soapy wanks are just a bonus

I hated that Warner Bros if that's the cinema you're on about. We went to see Goblet of Fire when it came out and were told there were lots of mothers with babies there. We thought nothing of it until finding out they turned the volume DOWN to "not disturb the babies" who then cried through the whole damn thing and we had to rely on reading the subtitles as we couldn't hear the dialogue.

Best cinema in Tokyo is the Toho one in Ginza. Proper fancy layout with staircases and stuff. Saw Transformers there and it was amazing. Avoid the cinema in Matsudo (I'm pretty sure that's a definite so don't worry) as it's actually a room with a big TV.

No the one in roppongi hills used to be a virgin cinema and then became a toho one last time I was there. It's outside the huge mori tower, it's got escalators and a huge water feature in the lobby with a little store where you could by movie brochures and memorabilia from the films that they were showing
