Not sure how long you're staying for but I've just rented a short-term flat in Gotanda (it's 7 minutes from Shibuya and about 25 minutes from Akihabara by JR Yamanote line train). The company has a few dotted around but this was the only one available for when I needed it. It's about ?620 for 13 nights so ?50/day, and that's all inclusive. For that I've got a single room(decent size, double bed with telly, large closet, vacuum, iron, aircon, etc. Plenty of room for both my suitcases and my large bag), bathroom, toilet, washing machine and kitchen(with proper fridge/freezer, two hobs, microwave and little oven). The place is groovy, with videophone, and the rooms are soundproofed. Location is great, lots of shops nearby and the Mos Burger here closes at 1am

Considering I just spent ?89/night for the first five nights, it's a bloody bargain. Plus I get to actually live instead of just 'stay' like I did at the hotel. Also, being an apartment, you can sneak people in without paying extra. The linen I got is enough for two people(well, two that are intimate I guess) other than that they only gave one pillow. Internet is quick and telly is pretty decent, too. Also, as it's not a funky hotel TV but a regular one, you can hook your stuff up to it easily(I've got my laptop connected). At the hotel they'd disabled the VGA port. This is a smoking apartment so it smells a bit funky but only just, and I've aired it out and it's fine now. They have non-smoking ones too but not for when I needed it.

Tokyo Monthly 21 offers furnished apartments for rent with No Deposit, No Key Money.

I'd definitely recommend going this route if you're more independent as you have to clean up after yourself, but I think it's perfect. I suppose my attitude to accommodation is different because I'll be staying in Japan for a year and not a few weeks so don't mind washing clothes and linen, but it's great so far.

Bear in mind I booked through Agoda to get that rate, which is at 20% discount.

^ cheers billy in not sure my best mate (who is a bloke) will appreciate the double bed though is there any twin ones do you know?

I've no idea. I think they only do single and double beds and no mention of two beds in a room that I can see...

Hope so. I have no idea what to do when I go will have to make a plan Had a nightmare picking the hotel so much choice I went for one in Shinjinku I think it was in the end 28sq meter room so happy enough with that (UK premier inns are 22 for comparison) I can't sleep in a box so had to drop a day (7 nights) any suggestions for a first timer? I'm not really worried about spending to travel is it do-able to spend a day at Mt Fuji and another at Kyoto or is it a stretch (travel wise not money wise) I'm assuming its similar to London Z1/Paris price to travel about/eat. Any pointers or must sees are more than welcomed

Maybe Paris is a cheaper than Tokyo, but never been there for years.
The trip to Kyoto from Tokyo takes about 2.5 hours via Shinkansen, so it's doable in a day if wake up early, though I would recommend spending at least a couple of days there, I've found Kyoto and Osaka more vibrant than Tokyo. Also, if you are interested in temples and nature, the area between Kyoto and Osaka is absolutely gorgeous.
But then again, there's so much to do in Tokyo...you'll want to keep Akihabara and Nagano as one of the last spots to visit or there are high chances you'll spend too much time there I'd recommend to visit Akihabra during the week and not on Satrudays and Sundays, way too crowded.

Then you'll have to give impressions on Tokyo during November. I'm thinking to get back there next year around October, though I'll probably stay in Kyoto/Osaka for the most part: the spring there was lovely (had the luck to go there when the cherry trees were in full bloom), I expect a lot from autumn

Spent time in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka funnily enough with my girlfriend in November last year. It was my first time there and she and her dad (shes Japanese by the way) showed me some amazing places, if you do your research first it can be an incredible trip.

I've never seen so many games in one place like there was in Akihabara, picked up some great Japanese games.

I loved the whole trip so much I insisted we go again this October!

I'm not far away from my first trip Japan. The lady and I are going to Tokyo with some friends in the first week of June. I've starting sifting through this thread and wanted to say thanks to everyone that posts up helpful stuff in here, it's a great resource!

Take shorts! When I went the last week of May / first week of June it was muggy and hot. Deforestation light clothing weather.

Dunno about Tokyo, but the weather is really unpredictable in Kansai right now. Sunny one day, rainy the next, yet still really warm while being rainy. Really difficult to dress for, prepare for any possibility.

Weather's fine where I am in Saitama(15 mins East from Akihabara). I go to Tokyo every weekend and sometimes mid-week and the weather's the same. It's warming up nicely but it's been quite windy lately and makes the evenings quite nippy. Also, it says it'll rain tomorrow...

Forecasts seem pretty accurate here, a lot more than London forecasts, anyway, so no surprises yet.
