I went to Chiba recently for the Tokyo Game Show `08 and made a video:

Anime is what killed the Akiba gamers used to love. Still an amazing place after all those years.

not sure it is, it's the increased development that's doing it. Rents are pushed up meaning it's harder and harder for smaller games stores to exist.

That said, not sure how the anime places are holding on - though then again, they tend to be even more back street.

Pity about the stabbing/truck incident. There was a good atmosphere in aki, but it's since significantly less vibrant since.

what the hell!? the sofmap with the good retro **** is gone! and loads of the game stores have much larger anime/assorted anime crap sections. akihabara was never much cop for retro games anyway

The Softmap near Club Sega has lots of secondhand stuff (retro incl.) on the 3F.

Also try Liberty, they have several shops around and the one vaguely opposite Messe Sanoh on Chuo Dori has lots of stuff on the 2F.

there's the small place furhter up in aki - can't remember the name of it for the life of me :

                2nd/3rd floor.

Not bad, but a little pricey on some stuff. Worth a look.

Anyone know any good places in tokyo for retro stuff, namely famicom and famicom disk system stuff?

see post above - has a good selection of both.

It's also nice to see that Mandarake has moved all the interesting stuff to their new Akihabara store, so you don't have to go to Nakano for that anymore. New Sofmap next to Club SEGA is great btw.

New? That one has been there a while. The newest ones are the ones replacing the Yamagiwa stores.

Is the Mandrake you're talking about two streets behind Mr Donut? I've never been there, but when you mentioned it I pulled out a map I got on Christmas Eve and found it.
