I'm really looking forward to this trip, i'l hopefully manage to rustle up over a grand for use while im over there, it's my number one priority for this year, il let you all know how i'm getting on with the saving

And thanks again for the advice.
Maybe it'll be a relief to get away on your own. And over a grand will do just fine, you'll be able to eat some proper food!

What time of year were you planning on going?

So, not wise to say that I've now only got 12 days until I go?!! (Sorry).

I agree with the whole "lack of adventure". The problem I had is that I went straight into full time employment from college and there never seemed a suitable time after that to "go adventuring".

Marriage, funnily enough, has given me the excuse I need to travel halfway around the world to buy loads of random games and plastic statues. Oh, and experience a wonderful culture and lovely people.

It's all about my priorities is my holiday

Right: I'm packed, got me travellers cheques, DS & PSP are both charged (managed to get a couple of extra PSP batteries on the cheap too so hopefully plenty of Ridge on the flight for me), the wife has said that she's going to try and not freak out on the plane and I haven't slept for 2 days due to unbelievable levels of excitement (I, therefore, feel a bit wired).

I'm all set, be back posting in 12 days

Right guys i need some advice. Iv had a look at a few of the hostels mentioned earlier in the topic. They look very good. Unfortunately i am getting into Narita at 10pm so i am a bit worried about getting to a hostel in central tokyo (never been to Tokyo, let alone travelled on my own). I am traveling to tokyo at in June, so not long now (a few days after my final uni exams). I have looked at Sakura hostel and tokyo international backpackers hostel... both look awesome, but I would like some personal opinions. I am aiming to pay around £10-£20 a night on accommodation. So any recommendations would be great. Are they easy to find? Any other great ones?

Thanks for the help... I cant wait... but worried too

                      Andy

EDIT: when traveling alone have you guys found it hard to find new mates? Mostly to hang around with (Gaijin + Japanese). I am aiming to hang with my japanese penpal, but i dont want to put too much pressure on her (as iv only spoken to a bit on the phone, and i havent met her yet).

I'm off to teach in Japan in about 10 days, my first stop is Osaka for a few nights before mocing southwards towards Kyushu, just wondered is it true that most Japanese stores close on a Wednesday? And wondered what the rough opening/closing times were for stores in Den-Den town?
                        cheers

I don't think stores close on Wed, but being as it's a non christian country, there is no tradition of closing on Sundays. If a shop closes it could be on any day of the week or even sometimes the first Tuesday of the month, for example..

Good God!! If I ever wanted to emigrate to another country then it is most definitely Japan!!

Everything about it was amazing!! The people were amazingly friendly, everywhere was clean, public transport ran on time...amazing!!

obviously there's a small amount of "Wow factor" in there as it was my first ever trip but, seriously, I'c trying to think up ways that I could get out there and stay.

note that there is the odd store that does close on wednesdays in Akiba - and those tend to be the arcade board shops, so if anyone is planning to hit there on a wednesday to pick up copious amounts of PCB based fun, then you might want to shift your planned day
