It's Japan's only sub tropical prefecture and it's the number one requested destination for NOVA English teachers. And yes, it's full of Uncle Sams....

Finally booked our flights after what seems like weeks of messing around. Flying on the 19th August and coming back on the 30th. We couldn't be too flexible with the dates as Katy is speaking at some conference on the 23rd. Shouldn't complain too much though as it means her flight and half the hotel will be paid for.
              I am now quite excited.

Hopefully just booked our hotel, will get an email in a day or so saying if there is any room at the inn.

Anyone ever been to the Ghibli museum as that is one of the things katy is up for? Just wondered if it was user friendly for none Japanese speakers.

As a matter of interest is it really bad? I've been twice now but both times it was in May. This time around there was some really nice weather.

The rainy season is the annual deluge that lasts from about the first week in June to mid July or so. This year it seems to be late, at least in the Kanto region though it may have started in Kyushu.

It's not so bad just wet for a month and the humidity goes through the roof. The humidity is so bad in fact that unprotected metal items may even start to rust inside the house.

Going in August - looks like we've booked into the Century Southern Tower in Shinjuku. Not sure how close that is to things.

Also booked one day/night at the Yumoto Fujiya in Hakone. Think there are hot springs there or something but I was hoping to see more of Fuji - but one day won't be enough.

Can't wait as I won't have had a real break from work for almost exactly a year.

It's right near Shinjuku-ku Station, mate, your near everything tbh.

Shinjuku is at the end of a load of the metro lines. So you are quite well positioned. The only disadvantage to shinjuku is that you'll have a long train journey to Asakusa, Uneo, Akihabara etc. I had exactly the same problem when I was in Tokyo (but coming from the other direction), as I was based in Asakusa. It meant trips to Shinijuku and Shibuya took 50mins or so.

50 mins? You can get across town quicker than that, even the yamanote won't take that long. Asakusa is a little out of the way maybe but hardly a problem. Transportation should be no probs at all. Arguably, Shinjuku is the most convenient place to see Tokyo I reckon, the only thing it doesn't have is the shinkansen.
Fuji is possibly better seen from a slight distance anyway mate, no worries - you'll love it.
