He was the man in the Champions League.
Don't really agree, to be honest.

Sure he scored regularly and spectacularly in European competition for us, but was so bloody frustrating to watch in the Prem - just wasn't consistent and didn't do the basic things right at all to the point where he had next to no impact on most league games that he played in. Benayoun is a better player every day of the week imo, and a proven performer in the league.

Id pick Benayoun over Garcia without doubt, Garcia just wasnt a good Premiership player.

I really hope Kewell gets an injury free season as im sure he still has the skill and ability to be a superb player it doesnt suprise me that Rafa would stick by him really.

Garcia was a bit hot and cold. He'd be making you cringe by losing the ball from a failed flick and then after you've slagged him off he'll net an important goal. If I be honest, I'm not too sad he's gone.

I'm a huge Luis Garcia fan, I even had him on my shirt (much to my annoyance now ) but he didn't really suit the Premiership style. His best games came in Champions League and FA Cup games, as far as the league goes he come up a bit short. With that in mind, selling him and bringing in a proven Premiership player in Benayoun makes sense given that the Premiership is priority this season more so than ever.

Aye, the Prem is top priority.

I loved Garcia for his goal against Juventus - but as someone posted above, he wasn't suited for the premiership and that really needs to be our priority. Benayoun is tried and tested in the premiership, he has the flair which we want alonside the graft that we need - he might not score the spectacular goals that garcia might have (that is debateable considering some of the goals he has scored for a poor west ham side) but he won't lose the ball as often nor be as much of a liability.

As much as I loved Garcia I did **** myself every time he had the ball in our own half since he would lose it as much as he would pass it to a team mate.

I found Garcia very frustrating until bellamy joined. It was then that I realised that Garcia's "problem" at Liverpool was that he was an attacker given defensive responsibilites but never let us down when played up. He lost the ball in defensive positions but, really, he should not have been there. His running off the ball was good and he had the talent for a pass, dribble or strike. It was then that he realised that he was basically a better version of Bellamy withot the propensity to mouth off.
i'll miss him. Good luck lil luis

First 3 point start to a season for 5 years! Get in.

Nervy match though. Liverpool were on top but only had the one (own) goal to show for it, then when Villa scored that pen in the 82nd minute I thought it'd be two points dropped, but good old Stevie sealed the win with a stunning free kick in the 88th! You beauty!

I think the free kick was as close to perfection I have seen since USA '94 and some random American. But this time he got it over John Carew.

Excellent. First games are always nervy, especially since we haven't won many of the past several seasons. However, today we looked the part. Torres and Kuyt looked confident and pretty lethal at times up front. Unlucky handball from Carra, but justice came and it came from a spectacular free-kick indeed. \o/

Sissoko made me edgey when he came on at the end. Losing the ball twice

That was the look of my face when Steven Gerrard scored that goal.

It was something very special to watch live but when the replays kept showing it over and over again, you realise that you are looking at one of the finest free-kicks in a long time although yes, the free-kick was a questionable decision.

Torres looked sharp and eager throughout his minutes on the pitch and although he didn't score he shows great promise and carries over his performance to Anfield next week in which he should get a huge reception.

An unlucky handball for Carra though; I felt sorry for him. That bloody chap Barry put the ball way over the penalty spot and Reina's protest was deserved despite getting a yellow card(!)

I rarely worry about Liverpool when they play at home but they need to play consistently like they did yesterday when they play away if the team wants to challenge Chelsea and Manchester United this season.

A little off topic, but I had to show you this impressive speed painting video of some talented guy using photoshop to create a Torres wallpaper > here

Looked a bit iffy at first, but ends up pretty spot on. You can get the finished jpeg here

Might need to score more goals first
