The season is turning into something of a disaster...but tbh I think people are getting a little carried away and probably had expectations that were unrealistic.

At the start of the season, looking at how much we had spent and the overall quality and value of our squad, I thought we would finish no higher than 3rd again but hoped we would finish a little closer points wise to the eventual winner - anything better seemed fairly unlikely. I'm pretty surprised at how many people seriously thought we would be in with a chance of the league this season.

I think a change of manager will be a pretty hefty backwards step, especially if funds are going to dry up.
To make this current side into League winners would require the purchase of 3 or 4 top drawer (i.e ?15-20m) players or for a few of the promising young players like Insua, Nemeth & Pacheco etc. to turn out to be real world beaters and come through together. I don't think either will happen.

I don't see how Mourinho/Hiddink/whoever could get the current bunch to win it.

The one worry is the players loosing faith in him, Gerrard seemed to get the hump when Lucas came on and he was shifted up and across the pitch (despite it being the absolute correct change, as Gerrard instantly saw more of the ball in space).

i know what your saying mate, but rafa has had plenty to spend, but not spent it good enough, sure we have had very good buys in torres and alonso and masch but with the masch deal now virtually done rafa has spent 70 million this season alone and we fighting for 4th, we had 4th easy last season so we are going backwards.

why does he continue to buy centre midfielders? we had gerrard and alonso, so he buys cover in sissoko, then he ruins confidence of alonso and sissoko by buying masch and lucas, im not saying hes not strenghed the squad, but at one point we had 3 very good centre mids in gerrard sissoko and alonso we got to european cup final twice with these, i cant help thinking the 18.6 million for masch and the 6 million for lucas could have gone in to 2 class wingers. now im delighted to have masch and lucas but they not better than we already had bar sissoko, what im saying is he keeps buying players for positions we have cover in, look at centre back for example this season, we struggled, left back we struggled and up front we have struglled, may as well play torres alone as he must feel like it.

I think that's us down to 15 fit first team players now. Nice.

Except, of course, we don't - because he's on crutches...

Babel's injury from the Holland game was just a knock, so he'll step in I guess.

Babel and Crouch would be nice. Although I'd put money on it being Kuyt n Crouch.

Official word from Anfield is that Torres will be out for 10 days.

Ah, nuts. We can survive without Torres for the Chelsea match I suppose; they're normally really tight and the odd goal from a Benayoun or a Gerrard could get us something.

He better be fit for Inter though - and it looks like it could be a close call
