O'Neil spent massive money and was paying massive wages at a club that couldn't afford it. That is why they have to sell the players they have.

When it was made clear the investment had to stop at the level it was in the past couple of years he threw the dummy out of the pram.

He plays horrible football which relies upon quick players on the wings and a big target man. Lump it long and hope for a knock down.

Randy Lerner brought Martin O'Neill on the basis that he wanted to make them a top four side. To reach that level a club has to be competitive in the transfer market and a part of that is paying out high wages but I don't think that you could put Villa in the same bracket as a Manchester United or a Chelsea in that regard.

I went to Celtic Park several times during his reign there and I saw his team play some attacking and passionate stuff; I could never call it horrible football.

He does play dire football and spends over the odds on questionnable players.

Plus he spent champions league money for a couple of years and never delivered CL revenue, that's failure and the road to bankruptcy.

Absolute nonsense. His C.V. speaks for itself.

I'm not sure his CV shows he has the ability to manage anything other than average teams. I'm not entirely sure I could see him doing well at Man U or any of the bigger clubs. I'd be very interested if I was proved wrong though.

His brand of football is horrific, its the kind of stuff that bores me to tears. Lumping it long to Carew or Heskey in the hope Young or Agbonlahor would race onto a knock down is backwards.

As has been said, he tried to get Champions League football and failed. A club without the revenue to support such a push can only last for so long on that kind of budget.

edit : Also, any kind of football played in the SPL can be disregarded. Rangers and Celtic are so far ahead its boring. The teams they play week in week out are so poor they'll always look good.

I agree with you to an extent but what must be said in his favour is that got them to an UEFA cup final and to some more than respectable seasons in the Champions League. I remember Celtic taking the game to Liverpool over two legs and actually beating them away at Anfield; no mean feat for any side in europe from a lesser league. Celtic were a shambles when he started and he restored a great deal of belief and pride by the time he left.

Leicester was much less than an average team when he took over and established them as a competitive premiership side with very little resources. If you add a League Cup win on top of all that it's nothing but impressive. I don't remember dire and negative football at Filbert Street. I do remember a side that played to win and without a sense of fear.

It turns out that Grant is staying put after all, and that West Ham are "committed" to keeping him lol.

Having to put up with the machinations of Gold, Sullivan and Brady will probably end up with Avram Grant being committed

Redknapp said the Olympic stadium would be "a desolate graveyard" if West Ham got it.

                    What an arse.

I'm not especially thrilled at us giving Redknapp a tax payer subsidised stadium with unbeatable infrastructure just so he can demolish its athletic element and providing a shoddy half arsed alternative for athletics instead.

You've got to hand it to Redknapp, he's one hard working son of a gun. Now he's even head project manager for our new stadium plans too!

I mean, really, ffs, giving Redknapp a stadium so he can demolish it?

Totally agree with your points about Spurs (or West Ham) being given a tax payer subsidised stadium though. Personally I think no football club should get it and they should have just stuck to the original plan of reducing it to a 25K athletics only stadium. Failing that I'm praying they give it to West Ham. Rather come 14th in Tottenham than 4th in Stratford.

Stratford Hotspurs lol. Can you imagine the grief you'd get off Arsenal fans if that were to happen?

At least they'd be named after a real place

Don't forget that he personally negotiates all contracts and probably manages the stock in the club shop.

I suppose we wouldn't really be able to call them the Woolwich Wanderers any more

Why have Everton loaned Eric Dier from Sporting to put him in the academy? I can only think that Sporting will think its good for his education as a few times he has been quoted as saying he is going to turn pro in Portugal before moving to Engalnd....tho we know in football barely anyone keeps their word if cash is flashed before them.
