Konami owe much of their early successes to the traditional shooter and all of its variations. In the 80s and early 90s, they commanded much respect for their understanding of what made a shooter tick in both vertical and horizontal adoptions, with old school style gameplay in titles like Gradius and...

The Untold History of Japanese Game Devlopers review (DVD and Book)
In May 2013, John Szczepaniak, a Bordersdown member and occasional article contributor, fired up a Kickstarter project. The aim was to get £50k to fund a 10 week trip around Japan to interview developers and relevant entities connected to the history of Japanese videogaming, as well as visiting historical locations, with the output being a book and DVD. His backers smashed through to £70k. John sent us the book and DVD, so I took a break from playing games to check out The Untold History of Japanese... -

Tokyo Game Show 2013 Retrospective
Of all the quotes about the Tokyo Game Show, all the controversial statements (Keiji Inafune's comments about the Japanese games industry being finished), or the silly event slogans throughout the years (“Game, it's so energetic!”), the one that still sticks out to me is an unofficial one that was repeatedly stated throughout the 2008 edition, upon the wake of the (temporary) demise of E3: that TGS was “the biggest games trade show in the world”.
At that time, TGS was drunk on its own s... -

Scope Creep - the complexity of reviewing
In the early period of my gaming experience, if someone asked me what a game was like, the answer was simple. “It’s great. The controls are good, there is lots to do, it takes two hours to complete and it takes four minutes to load. I didn’t encounter any bugs.”
Fast forward to today, and if someone asks me what a game is like, the answer is less simple. “It was good when I played it, but they keep changing it. I think it was rushed. There were bugs everywhere, but they might have fixed... -

Masters of Doom Book Review
Masters of Doom by David Kushner is a thorough and detailed account of Id Software's history from their early days writing titles for the periodical Softdisk, through their formation and early distribution partnership with Apogee Software, right up to the pinnacle of Quake's heydey with the release of Q3: Arena. Along the way the writer takes you on the roller-coaster journey that was the first person shooter genre in the 90s, including everything from the start of the competitive scene, early companies... -

Why import videogames? - Pros and cons of importing
If you are interested in videogames, you may have heard of importing. Bordersdown is a premier website for gamers who are interested in playing games from abroad (Imported consoles are also called NTSC consoles, hence the site's original name "NTSC-UK"). Importing grew from a tiny collective to a thriving scene, even if the need has dropped off with the advent of HD and global releases. But why? Why do people import videogames to the UK in the first place? What are the benefits? And is it for y... -

Appearing recently on digital storefronts, this digital exhibition coincides with the 20th anniversary re-release and bringing together of Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac albums. It's been made in collaboration between the band and Epic Games, though it's also very quick to tell you that it is not a game, epic or otherwise. That, I think, is a mixture of nervous expectation-setting, alongside its creators selling both games, and what they've created, short.
Unless you're one of those sorts...-

by Charles ROnce upon a time, there was a Freeloader. It was late, as usual, but everyone waited with baited breath, because it promised much.
And so it came to pass, the Freeloader finally arrived, and oh what gifts it brought. The ability to de-zone everyone's Gamecubes. Finally, an easy (and cheap) way for anyone in the world to play games from anywhere else in the world. It was welcomed with open arms.
Datel, after many delays, have now released their de-zoning disc. Twice. The f...-

by ArchivesDescribing the greatness of Goldeneye isn't the easiest task in the world. If you were to show it to a gamer who has recently been showered with PC First Person Shooters such as Far Cry, then they'd scoff at the low-polygon landscapes, the poor digitised textures of Robbie Coltrane and the frame rate equivalent to the IQ of a table leg. They'd be missing the point though, as levels such as "Surface" are the forebears to Far Cry's grand vistas.
Which leads us nicely into one of the reaso...-

by ArchivesAs a first visit to any kind of games show, it was going to be very interesting to see what all the fuss was about. I remember reading about the Tokyo Game Show among other shows in magazines years back and having a sense of delight and amazement. Did you ever dream of going to a game show in Japan? I'm sure it's something most avid gamers can associate with. On Sunday the 28th of September, my wife and I headed towards Makuhari messe from western Tokyo, a journey of 2 hours. When we finally ...
