Interestingly, I'm in exactly the same place...

I know your pain - I've gone back to Vice City these last few weeks, and I'm thoroughly stuck on "The Driver", the race mission from the club before the bank job. Even 'cheating' by leaving a handily placed PCJ600 nearby isn't getting me the win.

I had to release my rage somehow so afterwards I tore all the way across the third section on a cop-killing spree to make myself feel better. I dunno how much more racing I can take though.

Those racing tracks are just so unfairly designed - one section has you bouncing stupidly close to a lake and blindly over hills, another has you launching off a jump through a barn. If you get the speed wrong on the run up to the jump you end up smashing into it, and usually turning up over and destroying the car. Yes you can avoid it, but when the ramp builds into view at the last moment this isn't very easy to do.
These racing missions are nearly impossible to do first time, and that is just bad design imo. They are not difficult because of the challenge, it's difficult because they are unfare. Unforutnately, other missions are the same.

Thats just the thing, they don't seem to be coming from anywhere.

I did another camp out later on yesterday night. This time the cars kept dissapearing and then re-rolling down the hill while I was sitting atop my rock watching them

I even ended up belting up the hill to see if I could see anything but there was nothing to be found

Shock horror, they must must be spawning out of nowhere! Who'd have thought that was possible in a videogame?

lol, they also seem to randomly change colour too :|

I was watching one car, turned around for a split second turned back, and it had gone from blue to red O_o. Happened afew times, it really is crazy, but no "monkey man" so far.

The races are easy and should take 2 goes at most. Pah, gamers today. I'd say I'm around 80% through the missions of my second play through, but I've spent a LOT more time fannying about. Almost 100 hours of play and I'm still not bored with the game.

I do love the game but I have to disagree with you. The races were the worst part, I spent hours of falling down a cliff and then swimming back to the race point to try again until I finally did it. It was so frustrating.

The races are easy to complete if you follow my two step plan :

1 - Drive fast at the start to get ahead of everyone
2 - Once ahead, drive steadily and carefully.

Seriously. When I did Wu Zi Lu I rolled my car down a hill near the end and still ended up winning by a large margin.

Fair Well My Love is slightly harder as the opposition is a bit more aggressive, but the same tactic applies. Even if you suck you should be able to make up time and places by driving really, really fast on the bit near the end on the dirt track (after the town and bridge).

Well i've just been there, 2 cars were there, one changed colour, one disapeared and a plane crashed and nearly hit me

Oly, you do know that the checkpoints in the races have arrows on pointing you where to go? Hehe, on the first race it took me about 5 attempts before I realised there were directions

I've done the second one now, it's all about having the right cars imo. Once I got the sports car it was loads easier.

Was 13K short of buying a place near the race in San Fierro last night and pool wasn't giving me much of a return. I wandered around looking for a pimpmobile for well over an hour but no luck. Then I find: the bookies

Made over $2,000,000 in half an hour. With a fair bit of saving and reloading obviously, but hey it's all about oppertunism isn't it? Anyway I've bought up all the properties in San Fierro city now with $1.98m left.

Bastard Air Raid mission is slightly taking the piss though, I mean, am I firing at the toy planes with a toy chaingun?

                              Wheres the bookies?

For the air raid mission you need to watch your radar close and try to only shoot the planes that are getting close to you and not the ones in the distance that don't pose a threat yet.

                                RTFM That's map not manual.

Okay I'll try that on the air raid mission. The radar gets seriously confusing though!
