You can rip him up if you find him... just put the thermal goggles on and follow his footprints after he runs off...

        Also of note :

If you run out of Batteries you don't actually need the Thermal's on, you can actually see his footprints with normal vision, muddy colour

Can anything touch this game for innovation this year, console-wise? A serious question, btw, to people playing the game right now. In my opinion: no. It's untouchable for innovation in 2004.

Last fight with the Boss so atmospheric and the ending very satisfying. On a side note anyone hazard a guess as to who the Boss' son would be, the one "stolen" by the philosophers (aka the Patriots now) ?

You don't even need to call Eva/Tanja on the codec. If you look closely at the artwork during the cutscene The Boss tells you of her child, you'll see the picture closely resembles Ocelot. Not only that, but it serves to cover a few plot holes, such as how Ocelot is a dual agent between the US and Russia, and also how he speaks fluent Russian. (He must have been raised in Russia, with his father The Sorrow). Although if that's the case then it raises yet anther plot hole in the mess that is MGS 2's narrative consistency...

Remember how Ocelot was surprised with Fortune's real ESP towards the end? When he didn't appear to believe in the "supernatural", and only in "cutting edge technology"? Well, if The Sorrow is his father, he shouldn't be surprised. He'd no doubt have seen first hand telekenetic powers before, which'd mean he wouldn't believe the only way to use ESP is through technology. Unless of course he intended to set Fortune up intially in tricking her into believing she had ESP when she didn't for his warped amusement based on personal experience.

Did he get raised by The Sorrow though? I thought Ocelot didn't know who his perants where and he was raised by Volgan or something. Also the fact that Liqued comes through and overtakes Ocelot via the arm may have something to do with The Sorrows powers to mess around with the dead

I think Ocelot was raised by the military in a similar manner to Solid and Liquid - the Sons of Big Boss never had conventional parentage, it was no doubt the same for Ocelot. Was The Sorrow Russian? The Liquid arm thing was as ludicrous as it was hilarious: "Brother!!!" "Liquid!!?!?!?!"

In answer to teh Treb0r's question, oh yes the game's innovative. It's got so many cool and original nuances going on amongst the other wonderful stuff. It's also got immense replay value - far more than the other MGS games. It just pwns, and I can't leave the damn thing alone. Best game of the year? Best game of the last few years if you ask me.

? i may have missed something in the serie's sprawling plot but could her son be gray fox??

According to Grey Fox's/ Frank Jaeger's bio he's half Vietnamese. Besides, I don't think he was that old, even in Metal Gear.

                      The Snake/EVA codec sequence...

states that Ocelot was given 'special treatment' by the Russian military, due to him being the son of some legendary hero. EVA says that he was born on the battlefield. His mother was shot in the stomach and had to give birth right there. The scar left by the birth was shaped like a snake. Volgin raised Ocelot much in the same way as Solidus Snake raised Raiden. This would explain Ocelot's sadistic tendencies, taking after his 'father' if you will. In the grand scheme of things, it all kind of explains why Ocelot is so damn good as a soldier.

Also on a gameplay note, the box trick still works .

                      Oh yeah...

anyone else notice the way The Boss is laid out at the end. It's all very biblical.

For anyone who doesn't feel like playing through the game again to see the Eva codec convo you can read it here thanks to some random user at gamefaqs:

Jack: EVA, I wanted to ask you about Ocelot?
EVA: Yeah, I know. He?s pretty infatuated with you, isn?t he?
Jack: That?s not what I meant. Aren?t the Ocelots an elite unit?
                        EVA: Yeah.
Jack: So how?d he get to be their commander? He can?t be any older than 18 or 19. I can?t believe he?s already a major?
EVA: I heard from the Colonel that he?s been given?special treatment.
                        Jack: Special treatment?
EVA: Yeah. He?s the son of some legendary hero or something.
Jack: No wonder he seems to have the right stuff? So who is this legendary hero, anyway?
                        EVA: Beats me.
                        Jack: ?
EVA: The Colonel never told me. All I heard was that his mother was supposedly shot in the gut during battle and that he was born right there, with bullets whizzing past them.
Jack: A pregnant woman in the middle of a battle?
EVA: That?s what I heard. They say that when they stitched her up, the scar was shaped like a snake.
Jack: Well, that?s battlefield medicine for you. What about his father, this legendary hero?
EVA: He didn?t tell me. I don?t think Ocelot?s ever met his parents.
                        Jack: Are they dead?
EVA: Maybe, I don?t know. There were a lot of MIAs back then, during the last days of the war. Ocelot probably would have ended up the same way. But he was taken in and raised by GRU and Volgin.
                        Jack: Because he was special?
                        EVA: That?s my guess.

Agreed - my PS2 GOTY without doubt.

I'd have to say it's probably my Playstation 2 game of the year as well. And as strange as the comparison may seem, I think MGS 3 can be held up in the same way San Andreas.

Both of them have polished, refined and added some much need sophistication to already established formulas. Each are also both atmospherically rich, managing to deal with criticisms levelled at their previous sequels by returning and enhancing older forms evident before within their series.

In the case of San Andreas, it's expanding on GTA 3's diverse level design in comparison to Vice City, and opening up the amount of choices and tasks we're able to immerse ourselves in.

With regards to MGS 3, it's falling back on a slightly less abstract story with characters who aren't quite as irritating as those found in Sons of Liberty. Not to mention the fact that the change of environment is accomodated by advances in gameplay design which allow a few unique twists to be intergrated into the standard-MGS formula.

If it wasn't for Half-Life 2, either of these two would be in a strong position to walk away with game of the year during any other.

It's amazing to see how much the hype factor affects peoples' buying decisions. MGS3 is the equal of GTA: SA and the better of Halo 2 in terms of sheer quality, but has recieved far fewer replies, generated a lot less interest and been bought by a lot fewer people on here. Even the replies there are in here are limited to about 5-6 people posting frequently. And all because Kojima let it slip quietly and without fanfare onto the market.

Hopefully, the PAL and Jpn releases will make up for this. For anyone casually dropping-in on this thread, who hasn't bought the game, IT'S BETTER THAN PS1 METAL GEAR SOLID. YES, THAT GOOD!
