Yeah approaching from the side can be done just alot harder than before, agreed the guards peripheral vision is increased, my example was for mid to long range sight avoidance.
If you want to you can grab one, throw him down to K.O him (hard k.O throw),
or lightly throw him down, hold him up immediatly when he's on the floor with the tranq gun and then put him to sleep.
Mess about with cqc until you get it down, at first I was having troubles too. Questioning the guards can give you tips too remeber to keep the left analogue stick held down when doing it and not just tap it. Obviously keep in mind where the other guards are while doing this.

Can you still do the "FREEZE!" move from MGS2?? (holding up guards by pointing a gun to their heads)

cheers for that. I was thinking about clicking L3 for intterogating

Interrogation is actually pretty useful as far as play mechanics go as well. Some guards give you radio frequencies to call off alerts and call in for mortar fire during Caution/Evasion mode.

Then there's the trippy Healing Radio frequencies, that restore stamina and such.

For those wanting more Kojima madness...

when in the cell after being tortured, save your game. Re-load that save to experience Snake's nightmare during his sleep. Contact your backup team for some funny conversation afterwards. Leave the transmitter in your body if you want an amusing scene with EVA at the waterfall (leaving it in does mean you will have to try and avoid the Ocelot Unit, as they have tracked you).

Regarding food, I think Kojima missed an opportunity when eating mushrooms. It is the 60's afterall.

The number of gameplay variations and magic little touches/Easter Eggs is mind-boggling

You can knife it, providing you're within reach.

If you just hold them them up and not bother tranq'ing them, they will stay there indefinitely. So you don't have to bother worrying about guards waking up at the most inopportune moments when you're wandering the environment.
Though, once you leave the area (when the game loads another section of the map) the guards will be back on patrol.

I've only tried it on Normal, so i'm not quite sure whether that ploy will work on higher difficulty settings.

                        Wow...

The battle against Volgin... long ain't it? The bastard just won't stay down. Really enjoyed it though; very intense.

It's actually not that long if you use the

                          shotgun ^_~
Also, snipe him with one of your assault rifles when he recharges from the mains.

                            using teh shotgun is badong.

Tranq everyone. That's the professional way of going about things in MGS

Are we on about the Volgin fist fight?

                              Yup.

You must have been lucky to have enough tranq at that point - I had practically nothing left (about 18 rounds - nowhere near enough to tranq a boss).
