    Mario 64 DS

What can I say. It's been sometime since a game made me smile while playing it. Where do I start?

Well, there's subtle changes to the origianl game, enough though to keep the player fixed. It's like playing it all over again really. This time however, you start off with Yoshi, he's slower, has his tongue attack, floaty jump and egg throws. There's new tasks to complete even on the 1st level. Remember how you jump into the picture and it ripples? Still there. Visually it's Mario 64, some textures seem to be displayed in a lower resolution, but it's not bothersome at all. Control method though. Almost feels awkward to play the game without analogue control, having to hold a button to run is weird. There's 3 modes of control in the game though, default is using the buttons and d-pad, next is a combination of that and the stylus & thirdly the stylus as the main input. I tried moving with the stylus, and while you get that analgue feeling back, it's gonna take some getting used too.

The sound is everything you could ask for really. Voices are crisp, music is Mario, but brought me another huge smile hearing all those 64 tunes again! This time there's some sort of suround sound buisness at work, something travels from the left to the right of the screen, and it will sound that way ya' know? Impressive for a handheld.

Remember how you could stretch out Mario's face in the original? It was a taster of the whole anologue thing. This time you can do the same thing with the stylus, cept' you got Yoshi etc to mess about with, you can really do some messed up things with the faces.

As if the game wasn't noteworthy enough, there's an option called Rec Room. Now each of the four main characters has two mini games each, all about using the stylus. I've never had so much fun playing a game recently with these! Yoshi's 'Wanted' has you picking out a character, say Mario, from a crowd. Sounds simple, well yeah it is, but like the rest of the games it's bloody addictive! Wanted starts of simple but rapidly get's hard as more faces appear, they start moving and looking for Mario in the crowd really becomes quite hard!

Another favourite of mine includes Luigi's Memory Match game. Luigi in his casino outfit (Toad serving drinks in the background) seves cards and you use the stylus to match flip the cards and match em. An old game given a new lease of life. So much fun!

All I can say is Mario 64 DS really has the magic. There's so much to do, great price for the game, cost me $30 and it's bloody Mario 64 given new life and magic.

Everybody needs a DS and this game. Simple.

Sounds good, but what of the 2nd screen? Do you actually need the map seeing as its such a familiar game?

Not really. You can use the second screen to place the stylus on and run about on the top screen. You don't need to look at the bottom screen if this is the case. The map contains hint's to the new items and tasks that appear in the game though, so it's of some use.

Firstly I'd like to say the following, you lucky bastard
Secondly, I'm interested to know how the game works using that thumstick strap, does it actually work?

Not tried it Strider. I read the manual and all it says is that you wrap the strap around your thumb and use it to touch the screen. Theres no button on it, it's nothing fancy. Just a black strap. Say's that some games that require some sensitive sliding motions are helpful with it. The games I've been playing need the stylus for pin point accuarcy.

So, excluding the mini-games how many new additions does it actually have?

i've heard it has more stars, i assume they've added more star challenges to the existing maps - if so, how do they play in comparison to the others? i felt that the original maps were very much designed around the star challenges - so i worry that any new ones wont be as enjoyable.

I have read a couple of other peoples impressions of using the thumb strap with mario and the verdict is it`s better than using your thumb but with the touch screen offering no resistance like an analog stick does, your thumb has a tendancy to drift of the the centre circle and you will have to re centre again. As much as i`m looking forward to playing mario i`m not looking forward to controling him. The analog stick was made for this game and it`s a real shame nintendo decided to abandon it and judging by other peoples impressions and verdicts of the game i haven`t heard one person say the control scheme is good but merely adaqete. Which is a shame really. And as for the thumb strap worse design ever as you can see by this pic http://media.ds.ign.com/articles/564...g_2454902.html it`s just gonna keep getting in the way. Looks like some trimming of the strap is in order when i get mine

a third party has a sort of 'contact lens' style thing which you just stick on the end of your thumb and rub against the screen, no strap to get in the way.

Controls don't sound too great too be honest. Need to play it though, but the beauty of Mario 64 was the control you had from the analog stick.

Been using the thumb strap and it increases the responsiveness, almost to the levels seen in Mario 64, so on that note the games gotton better.

                        Hi Taurus

So, hows the multiplayer WiFi aspect of the game? Does distance between players factor? is there like a search mode\gamertag thing? Did it even make it to the final game? :\

                        explain please. ta

I was wondering how you find out who's got what near you with the Wifi aspect, will you have a thing where you can check in the menu to find out who's near and what they're playing and send invites or something to change game? (so if they're playing say wario ware and you're playing mario you can message them to play Mario instead?) I'm intrigued. Also whats the frame rate like on mario? same as N64, better, or worse?

WiFi can involve the internet, but it's really just a wireless broadcast, its for sending and receiving.

To use it with the internet you need a wireless router hooked up to the internet then the wireless bit is your device talking to the router. with DS it'll most likely only be DS to DS within a certain range (like a PC can't go out of the range of the router and still get the internet). hope that clears it up a bit I know what it is it's jus hard for me to explain.
