Looks like a pretty solid 30fps to me. There's maybe the odd tick when there're a few cars on-screen, but no real problems that I've seen.

I picked up Ridge DS last week despite getting the PSP Ridge this week. I love Ridge, and really enjoyed Ridge 64 so it was an automatic purchase for me.

Do I like it? Yes and No. The controls seem a tad twitchy to me. Apart from that I am enjoying it, despite getting funny looks from people next to me while commuting to work. Do I care? Not really...better than reading the Metro!

My DS arrived last night with Ridge Racer and Mario. I played the first championship on RR and I am impressed. I am a long time RR fan since it first arrived in the arcades so am over the moon to have that first RR track on a handheld. I have played all RR games with the exception (ironically) of RR 64 so feel qualified to pass judgement on this one. Graphics a bit blocky on the cars in race but acceptable. It runs very smoothly at 30fps and I havnt encountered any slowdown yet.
Music is excellent!! This in one area of DS that I had not considered as handheld sound has always been very poor. I have always played my handhelds with sound off but not with this one. The RR music is v v funky and the speech and effects are great. Control is the one area this game stumbles on as far as I can see. I tried to play with the thumb strap but gave up after the tunnel on the first course. I was all over the track and bouncing off walls. Switching to the dpad was not a problem for me though as I have always played RR with digital. I just dont think the mechanics of the powersliding suits analog.
Anyway I recommend it totally, easily the best handheld racer I have played and as I said earlier worth the entrance price just for the original track!

My Ridger Racers DS arrived today from VG+ . Perfect timing as I go on holiday at the weekend. From the limited play I have had on it it plays pretty well and looks to be considerably better than Asphalt Urban GT. More detailed impressions coming up.

Ginza, I was just about to order Asphalt. Whats it like? I have played on Ngage and it was ok for that machine. Whats the handling like? Are the graphics as good as Ridge Racer?

I was going to try and get a copy of Asphalt because i wasnt sure whether RR DS would turn up in time for my holiday so i dont know about the handling of it but it looked ok to play.

Well, we've given it a less than 5...

Got my Ridge Racer DS today and despite the general scorn in the office towards it, I'm really enjoying it. The frame rate fluctuates every now and then, but it does look very nice and (IMO) looks much better than the original N64 version. I've also noticed that the collision detection is a little questionable, but it's not the ****show that many have already suggested.

I'm actually playing this with the thumbstrap and making considerably good progress (much better than what I am achieving with the D=Pad.

the biggest problem I'm finding at the moment though is that most people aren't given it the time of day simply because of what it looks like compared to Ridge Racers. It's like those Amstrad Vs Commodore 64 arguments I used to have at school...

Yeah, it's really disheartening. If people gave it half a chance they'd find a really enjoyable game, despite some tiny flaws. Reviews such as the one over at Eurogamer are a joke.

That will be the problem, I am sure Tiger Woods will suffer a similar fate when the PSP version comes out. Those old vs arguments were dull way back then, and twice as dull now. Its a good game, handles well, sounds great and brings back happy memorys of a dingy arcade in Picadilly Gardens from 10 years back I am more than happy.
Bells and whistles on the PSP version will probably amaze me next march but that is then and this is now!

I ripped the RR64 music a couple months back purely cos it's so heavy... if anyone wants the mp3s then PM me

Strider: when is your (games??s) review due out?

Cheers, DaveK22. Poor quality movie, but the game looks good. I am worried about dodgy collision detection, though. Looking forward to reading some 'proper' reviews, tbh.
