    PSP hardware

Move this if necessary but I thought it was apt here.

The machine is beautiful. Every single person who has seen mine has audibly gasped at the body and the screen. The screen is truly phenomenal (as I said at TGS). The colouring detail is fantastic, the white headphones work really well (visually) the silver is stylish the lights are nicely coloured, the shoulders are clear plastic so look invisible. Aesthetically, it is just a step above anything ever! Also surprisingly comfortable. The analogue stick is oddly placed and I have yet to get used to it but I think it is NOT for the thumb tips but the first joint. Odd to get used to but makes sense.
Battery life is acceptable for city life and commutes. I charge will prolly give me two-three days of standard play on commutes and breaks. But that is for me. Removable battery pack means you can pack spares or get the inevitably better ones that will be made with battery tech improvements.
edit:video works after I DLed from Neil's link. The directory structure is odd but (judging from my CLie) the structure is made by the Image Convertor software.
Quality is OK but not much better than my PDA. I think a higher bitrate could be sweet as judging by the Ridge intro.....

The machine is sickening and, to be honest, feels like the future more so than anything since the initial PS and Saturn tech demos. Much love.

Q: when using it from the mains, do you use the same power socket as the one for battery charging, i.e. does the battery have pass-through voltage? Does a light indicate if it's charging or being used? Ta.

Yep. the power light is green in normal use. Red on charging. Bearing in mind I have a type of red-green colour blindness, the colours could be wrong! But am pretty certain that the colour changes at least.

and that is how i have felt about the psp since it was first prototyped. The excitement that this brings, true new design with an amazing leap in the technology in a hand held console is massive.

Can't wait to get one myself but i have a wee bit of self control (and no money)

Are the dpad and XO∆ analog like with the DS2?

dpad and buttons are different from PS2 - bit shinier. Well they are now anyway....the stick is massively different of course but works well.

Got MP4s working after following Neil's link. If X: is the mem stick drive, dir structure is like this: X:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01\M4V00001.MP4

file has to be named like M4V etc I think.

do you know what video out is available?

                  how noisy is the drive?

how susceptible is the screen to finger prints?

how are the built in speakers?

how are you getting on with the analog stick?

any idea if games can be uploaded wirelessly?

this stuff might have been answered elsewhere, but I'm not sure.

is there any clear region info on the Ridge box? I've seen the DVD-like '2' box, but assumed that was just to do with video playback.

                    Good Qs Papercut.

I have not seen any video at all on UMD. Drive is not noisy at all. Bit of noise, of course but not annoying. Screen does collect fingerprints ut is very durable and can be easily cleaned with a quick wipe of even just your finger. SCreen brightness and sharpness negates effect of prints.

Speakers are well hidden. They are OK I guess- bit tinny as expected ut headphones are much better. Is in stereo though.
ANalogue stick takes a while ut will be no prob I think.
I think games can be uploaded (there is a game share option), and you can play off the mem stick too.

I don't think too much has been made of the sleep mode. But the PSP goes into sleep mode automatically at shut down. So when you turn the PSP back on it is at EXACTLY the same point. I played a Lumines session in 3 chunks earlier. Helps if you pause it when turning off though! This makes loading a moot point when you are hammering one game. Initial load of Ridge is approx 12 secs I think. Then, after that, you can just turn on and off for instant play. Even in midle of race. I was really surprised but this feature is outstanding for travelling and line transfers etc.

ok i got the Mp4's working at last but can't seem to convert them to a decent quality.

Any one got some sample clips they wish to share which show decent decoding ect....?

EDIT: I've worked it out now, i converted Houston feat. Chingy, i-20 & Nate Dogg music vid and it looks sooooooo deep.

Yeh IGN mentioned the sleep mode and gave it a huge thumbs up... especially for when that battery does die in the middle of a game.

I was just wondering what search functions mp3 playback has for anyone who has one? Does it have a time search or time line search function by any chance or is it just the standard rewind and fast forward?
