Bit unimpressed with this game. I think the thing that is bugging me is how poorly optimised the engine is!

        P4 3Ghz 2MB Cache
        2GB (4x 512, with Pairing) 533 DDR2 RAM
XFX 7800GT OC @ Stock overclocks, Latest Drivers.
        New SATA Disk

        (With all settings maxed out)
        1024x800 = Super Fast, minimum 74fps
        1280x1024 (Prefered res) = Judders from 65-35fps.....

If a new game has a revolutionary new graphics engine, then I accept that the latest hardware may struggle a bit, but come on, this game just looks "OK" with very doom like blocky textures, why does it run so badly! Odd. I don't want to turn effect off if it doesn't look that good to start with!

Game wise, I'm finding it a bit of a chore really. Nothing to excite me so far. I guess the slow-mo explosions and particle effects are cool, but no really interesting use of physics or environment interaction. I find aiming crap too.

I think I feel a bit cheated by the game's coders really. I mean have you seen what Xbox can do now!!! What have they used my hardware for? Is it written in ZX-basic or something?

Blocky textures? Do you mean blocky geometry? The textures are really high-res in FEAR.

The reason it's demanding on the system is I suspect mainly down to fill-rate. The game is packed with stencil shadow and it uses normal mapping and specular mapping on *every* surface. It's expensive stuff.

Doom 3 ran quicker but had massively lower-res textures and a lot less stuff going on (particles especially).

The other type of game engine is the kind Valve use with Half Life 2, which uses a lot of per vertex (as opposed to per pixel) shading, and has entirely pre-baked bitmap lighting and shadows for the scenery. Much kinder to the system, but the lighting is static by and large and has few specular effects.

Hmm, I'm not sure. What I mean is that walls and objects seem very blocky up close. Same with character models.

I'd go with the HL2 visuals every time, especially with the HDR effects of the loast coast demo.

I have only played fear for 5 levels, so I'll go back to it and try some more.

            Just a bit dissapointed.

I wonder if there is a reason the res won't let you go post the ones in the menu, I found a massive drop in performance if I went with a "custom" resolution, I could playing it with everything maxed out on the highest standard setting, but If I cranked up the resolutiuon to 1280*1024, it just became a horrible mess

Yes, the fact that a "Beefy" system is not allowed to go above 1080 without adding a command line variable was odd.

But in BF2 I had the same, and that flies at 1280 and looks a whole lot better.

They are completely different engine. Valve like soft, gentle lights which work well with outdoor areas. But the lights are static, as are the shadows. (except of course for the overlaid character shadows, which do go wrong from time to time)

With FEAR (and Doom 3) they have a completely realtime and unified shadow and light engine. Lights can animate and shadows are completely cast in realtime. It's a far more demanding technology than the rather more old school stuff Valve use, and has it's limitations - hard edged shadows for all but the beefiest of systems for example. Because it's so slow to render it also means areas must be kept very tight and contained.

The realtime stuff is the future and will eventually have nice soft edged shadows and will run quickly enough to be able to handle large environments, but that is some way off yet.

Half life 2 only looks good because the guys who were modeling and texturing seemed to know what they were doing. HL2 doesn't have all the swanky effects that FEAR DOOM and FARCRY have

Just got round to finishing this, overall very impressed. If there is a downside, it is the lack of variety in the environments, and the enemies you face - However, the AI is superb throughout, some of the fire fights you have are simply pure hollywood, with all the debris and shrapnel flying about. The way the back story is revelaed to your through phone messages and laptops works well.

Ending was good, did you all sit through the end credits and hear the phone conversation at the end?

Haven't finished it yet, too scared

I'm really at a loss as to why this game is supposed to be scary. Theres very few 'scare' bits, and what bits there aren't really any more scary than the flashbacks you get in max payne 2.

most of the scares are just someone walking past, or something moving. The flashbacks all seem to be variatons on the same thing.

This was supposed to be the hook to this game, and the reality is it's barely even a gimmick, so all thats left is a competent but unexeptional shooter, that looks pretty good, but no where near as good as it's demanding system specs would suggest.

                              however, the end

with the nuke going off as full first person experience was absolutely fantastic, and made the experience for me.

i want more of that kind of thing in future!

That's what scares me, figures walking past and strange noises etc.
                                The flashbacks don't scare however.
