I finally gave up on this. After forcing my way through 14 collossi, I realised between the crap graphics, the frustrating controls and time wasting riding around, I just wasn't having fun. Shame, because I really wanted to like it.

Well, I finished it on normal (I did so last week, but haven't posted here since then). The last colossi battle was particularly epic...
Overall? Yes, it was an enjoyable game for the most part, but I can't see me going through it all again in hard or time attack mode. Why? Well, as enjoyable as the game could be a times, it's simply too frustrating to have any true replay value for me. Some of the colossi battles were immensely frustrating and the sluggish controls were the main reason for this frustration. They say the best games make you feel as though it really is your fault if you die, but that certainly isn't the case with SOC. A lot of the time I found myself in situations because the controls didn't respond in time or decided to do their own thing (e.g. you press the appropriate button to climb a series of ledges only for the hero to do something else instead, like slowly edge his way to the side of the platform and drop off!).
Still, I'm glad I persevered, there are lots of very good ideas, though I can't help thinking Sony should've made this a PS3 launch title and used the new machine's extra power to smooth off the rough edges (and there are quite a few of those...). And am I the only one who found it immensely infuritating when Wanda (or whatever his name is), lay on the floor in a pathetic, crumpled heap for half an hour every time he sustained even the smallest of blows? You wouldn't want this guy's back in a fight, would you? (His predecessor, a twelve year old boy with no real combat skills was more resilient, FFS!).
However, moaning aside, the game has left me with one of the most touching moments I've ever witnessed in a game. I am, of course referring to
Argo's fall
. Never mind Aeris, that was a moving scene if ever there was one!Last edited by Ady; 13-03-2006, 16:43.

Originally posted by MayhemNow that I've finally got around to finishing the game, I really just have one question...
Resurecting Mono... did Dormin hold his part of the bargain, or was it the incantation from Emon that brought her back to life?
the Dormin are a decent bunch and they do uphold their part of the bargain in bringing her back but as was explained at the begining, the price that Wander was to pay was very large indeed.
After a two play throughs on hard and a load of lizard catching I have finally achieved the PAL version temple climb a couple of days ago. I`d played through hard and normal modes and unlocked all the goodies from the hard and normal time attacks. The only thing left was to try and get into the secret garden.
With that now done SotC is now on the shelf and I`ll have to say, SotC is the 1st game in a long long time where I`ve really got my money`s worth out of it. There isn`t really much to do once you make the climb but I think it is a fitting final task to a great game. You get up there and enjoy the view knowing that you`ve got every last ounce that the games has to offer, awsome!

Maybe you're a bit bigger than me Ady, but the smallest blow from a 40-foot-plus Colossus weighing several hundreds tonnes would certainly put me on my arse!
It's my day off today so I'm gonna have another run-through the game if I get the time, and see if I can't finanlly get up that bloody tower. They made the climb harder in the PAL version and I'm sure it was to make it a suitably colossal task - so for possibly the first time ever let me say DAMN DEVELOPERS and their DAMNED ARTISTIC INTEGRITY! >_<

I never saw it as a problem.. with all but one of the colossi the situation is recoverable, and with that one battle I assumed it was meant to be done that way. You make one mistake, it's over. Similar things happen with other colossi but in different ways... you just learn to stay out of trouble.

Just bought it...
No denying a great game, open world landscape, the horse(x100), the mysterious story, great battles, musical score(amazing) - im sure its all been said before.
...but imo let down by the framerate (ticked me off no end on #16's key jumps) and i found the camera quite annoying.

I thought I already posted about this but hey-ho...
I managed to scale the shrine! The secret garden is a tease - I was extremely disappointed that I couldn't climb any higherI ran across the bridge as well and timed it at around nine or ten minutes from one side to the other. Not much to see up there 'cause the light bloom really hits hard towards the end (probably to hide all manner of graphical glitches and such).

I think this game is way over-rated.
Great idea, but the hardware clearly isnt good enough to do this game justice.

I still think that the sheer lack of variation between the actual collossus fights were a big killer of the game for me. If it wasn't for having to hold on for 2 minutes at a time every collossus could be killed in 20 seconds flat.
See a monster, climb up hairy bits, stab.
Run across bland field and repeat x15.
How people can rave about a game which is so obviously flawed in the technological and gameplay department is beyond me.
If you read through this thread you can blantently see how people have gone from pre release hype , reading too many previews and interviews, then straight on to playing the game and seeing all the flaws , then forgetting that the game was actually quite broken and continuing to spout out totally hypocritical nonsense.

SotC is no less flawed than Oblivion technically considering the hardware its running on (perhaps even less so). Both are excellent games where the vision outpaces the technology and just about succeeds in doing so.
I don't see how other peoples' opinions can be hypocritical if the contradiction doesn't exist apart from in your own viewpoint.
It's not as if there's been a reversal from positive to negative, or vice-versa. People like SotC for a reason - because they believe it's a good game.

Also I wouldn't of said that SotC and Oblvion are comparable at all. SotC is a last generation PS2 game pushing the console so far that it actually falls down. Oblivion is a second gen 360 game that uses an absolute tiny fraction of what the machine is capable of.
You read the first few pages, its just people slating it for all of the flaws, later on they have turned 360 degress and are raving about it as if it is a zenith of game design.Last edited by EvilBoris; 16-04-2006, 15:22.
