    X3 The return PC

X2 the threat consumed many many hours.A great game but it had many flaws

1.The combat it was pretty poor compared to games like free space 2

2.The fact that the early ships feel tremendously under powered .The first few ships you own they could barely hurt any enemys let alone destroy them. And even my current argon nova one of the best m3 ships against 2 or more khaak ships you would be wasted (though the game was made harder by the 1.4 patch

There were other flaws but many were fixed with the plugins and patches

Now onto first impression for X3

The graphics are great better then x2 the planets you see are so well defined with seas land and even moving clouds.Shame you cannot land on them. The ships and factorys also seem more imaginative. With solar power plants looking like 3 Massive solar panels
    My comp is
    ati 9800
    athlon 64 3000
    1gb memory
And it runs fine a bit of stuttering though when things get busy

There are a few things that seem different from x2 on initial play one the menus You can access some menus by pressing esc or num pad enter and this brings up a transclucent menu on the hud you press the right mouse button which brings the mous pointer up so you can click on icons for each menu. Will take some getting used to but its pretty good.

The next thing i noticed no cockpit view you just have a fullscreen.Makes gameplay sense i suppose. But does detract from the atmosphere i always liked it when you got a new ship and you could see the different cockpits

With many stations now you dock on hangers that are on the outside now which i do not mind at all while again in x2 docking inside stations added to the atmosphere it makes more gameplay sense this time

No warp tunnel graphics either shame really

The big change you start with a argon buster and you go into combat very early on (if you follow the story) and the combat is far better you can actually destroy ships and even some khaak ships (which would have been i very very hard in x2 with the argon buster)

At the moment though i have just started trading but will give a more indepth comment as soon as i have put some good hours in

    Seems good so far

Oh download the patch straightaway. Up to 1.2 now

      What FreelancePolice said

I'm well looking forward to this. I'm glad to hear it runs on a 9800 - I was expecting to have to upgrade.

In my opinion runs as well as x2 Did.

One thing i forgot to mention you can choose how you start of.I selected normal. But there are others you can select like trader start where you have two ships and more money then normal.I think there is also one that starts you off with a small fleet to (i did not want to do that though). There are also some harder difficultys to.

Played it for 2 hrs last earned a bit of money.I do miss alot of little things like there being no pictures of the ships when you browse through the shipyards. And the new menu system thats ok but i prefer the old version.Even docking on the outside of stations i still prefer actually entering the stations it just all adds to atmosphere

Has the flight model been changed at all? I found it a bit wooden (for want of a better word) in X2. I know its a different style of game but it didn't have the immediacy of something like Tie Fighter or Conflict Freespace.

Well the combat seems better but its not up to freespace standard

But now i am in the main game there were 3 pirate ships one main ship and two escorts i was wasted in about 3 min i have a feeling during the first mission the enemys were made easier. But in x2 i would have been wasted in probably about 30 sec.But still i reckon with a couple of upgrades i will be able to defeat them (the starting weapon did get rid of the enemys shields pretty quickly)

I'm really looking forward to (my free copy of) this.
Does there appear to still be the depth in the trading and financial side of things as well?
              And is the universe heeeeuuuuuge?

Well if you have played x2 the layout of the sectors seems to be the same some changes here and there like a few warpgates are destroyed.

Trading is as in depth as x2 i would probably recommend starting the game as trader instead of normal difficulty if you want to speed things up

Trading i am doing at the moment (with my really small ship which can hardly carry anything) between kingdsoms end and queens space trading bo gas buying for around 400 selling for about 490 then getting energy cells buying for 13 and selling for 19.Still going to take me a while to afford a TL (trading ) ship though

I reckon every journey i roughly make 2-3000 a new ship would cost me about 200,000 So it will take me a while plus there are other ships trading to si i think that my current route will be exhausetd soon

There is some disgruntled people on the egosoft forums to be honest i cannot see why there so worked up.In the end so far this game is better then X2

But there are many little things that on there own dont mean anything (the lack of cockpit for instance) but for me they detract from the atmosphere. Also the menu system i will probably get the hang of it but i do prefer X2s menus.

Still i wont know for sure how much better this game is until i start buying factorys and fleets which will take me many hours of play yet

Despite having the free copy on the way I nearly crumpled today and bought one in Game. Somehow recovered my senses and didn't.

Joystick is all dusted down and ready to go.

Yeah I played it. Quite enjoyed it other than the combat/flight model. I found it complicated as hell mind you...

While there is better graphics and many alterations i began to settle into it the same was as in X2 admitidlly i cannot make a judgement until they have fully patched the game and got further.

There is a suprise though in one of the early story missions to which was very unexpected

Had my first taste of some fair combat against two harrier pirate ships destroyed them both quite easily. As soon as i can afford a argon law enforcement license i might give pirate hunting a go.Just hope the bountys are worth it
