If you haven't tried it I found Alchemy a very useful major skill. You end up so rich you can buy any weapons or equipment you want. And you can steal all your ingredients because they lose their stolen status when you mix them. This means you can get hold of masses of fruit and veg and away you go.

I'm in the same kinda boat as reektan actually, albeit a little further along (main quest completed just doing guild quests now). Would it be faster at level 18 and 46 hours played to just skill up magic or something as a bow/stealth type, or am I also better off re-rolling?
Also, how do you apply poisons to arrows?
Edit: forget all that, im harcore now. Finished the Dark Brotherhood quest line (awesome!) and got the rewards from that and the cryptNice bow

Well, late to the party as ever, I've been playing this for about 3 weeks now on the 360, I'm up to 44 hours and very much enjoying it. However, I feel I'm missing out on large chunks of the game, I've literally just been questing, I did about 4 quests on the main storyline and am now about 3/4 of the way through the Thieves guild quests, I'm in the Dark Brotherhood and the Fighters Guild and have 1 more recommendation to get for the Mages Guild.
However, I'm still at level 4. I don't really see any need to level up, none of the quests are causing me problems, so I'm just wondering around with standard armour and weapons, not dabbled in spells, alchemy, or any of that. Should I be worried ?
With Mass Effect and Fallout on my shelf to be played I'm not looking to Oblivion to fill my life, but just feel that maybe I'd get more out of the game if I did these other things. I'm planning on doing the Mages guild after the Thieves, so that might help me. I'm a Wood Elf by the way, if it makes any difference

Sounds like you're controlling your levelling, which is actually a good thing in this game as the enemies dynamically level with you. On the downside of that, you'll be getting poor versions of any special items you pick up along the way and you won't be facing the higher level enemies.
I played it the way you are the first time I played it through and it was all very easy. Started a second time and didn't control my levelling - things got hard pretty quick (Playing a stealth/ranger type character), but I think ultimately more enjoyable.
Need to continue back on with this actually. Prefer it to Fallout in almost every way.

i've now got the GOTY edition complete with the Shivering Isle and Knights of the Nine expansion packs. i was also assuming all other download contents were included but that's unfortunately not the case. any recommendations which of these DLCs are worth to spend further money on?
oh, and can i go back from the Shivering Isle to Oblivion any time? to pick up my hard earned Dragon Armor for instance?
also, here's talk of controlling levelling up... so what's the best way to level up quickly?Last edited by Uli; 25-04-2009, 11:41.

so i take it i have to be a powerful spell caster in order to take on the wizards tower? unfortunately i am a better warrior than a mage
good news is that i can travel between worlds anytime. i am really tempted to go back to Oblivion right away. but i have my Fallout 3 waiting which i haven't even touched yet.

Yes, you can go back to Oblivion from the Shivering Isles and vice versa.
As for levelling, I'd see what works for you. The quickest way to level up is to pick the three skills you'll use the most as your major skills. This can make things incredibly difficult if those skills aren't combat skills (The enemies level with you in this game).
Another way is to have your most used skills as minor skills, which means you can advance them without levelling. So you can increase your combat skills a huge amount without actually gaining a level - which means the enemies around you won't have levelled and the game will be easier.
I like controlling my levelling, but it's not for everyone. I'd see what works best for you - just remember there's a dynamic difficulty slider if it all gets too hard/easy for you.

Are the expansion packs just integrated into the game instead of standalone?
