I see your point, I know the chaotic nature of the game does force you to panic and rush over to the 'safety' of a Mech in certain situations and during those moments its very easy rip a gun off the side instead of climbing in.

Only if the ability to use the radar is a skill.

OK you might say "you shouldn't get hit by a rocket if you are good enough" but I'm not buying that, no way. How about the fact that getting into a mech takes time to fire up, in which time they have already aimed and are already firing rockets at you?
I find that when I'm hit I can then recover and roll out to a safe area - never experienced this repeatedly being hit until you die situation (that's not to say its doesn't happen). If you make sure you are topping up your heat energy you can take a real beating and still recover without croaking. As for the time it takes to power up the Mech, that's a tricky one - maybe you need to take that onboard and choose your moment more carefully.

Its has platform elements in the same way Metroid Prime has, if they took them out why would you need the Grapple Hook? I've been loving the ability to play vertically after spending so much time running around the flat horizontal levels of Gears. There are moments when you feel more like a mountaineer than a lone solider, pushing the speed at which you can scale to the limit. In my opinion its a crucial part of the game not some lazy addition to it.

Nobody is calling you a 'crap gamer', if its not your bag then move on, I struggled with the combat in Oblivion but wouldn't say that makes me a crap gamer - getting repeated killed by Fallows probably does though

Actually, I was fighting in a mission last night and I did think to myself, this is like the advert with the battlefield. Not exactly the same numbers wise but def gave me that sense of scale with all the is going on. Think it mission 7 or 8, really good.

The best depiction of a full scale battlefield I have ever played through was toward the end of ZOE2... when you get Jehuty fully powered and get the teleport moves and then go into the battle everything about it, the build up, the number of enemies, etc was all immense. A real stand out set piece in my gaming history.

LP has come close to that sense of scale but makes up for it with its sheer adrenaline pumping action and eye ball frying pyrotechnics

Aye, but most of that was visceral, with stuff going on that you couldn't get involved in. This bit in ZOE2 was tremendous as you could move the entire field helping out in the areas that needed most assistance... ok so it suffered from a bit of slowdown cause there was far too much going on for the PS2 to handle but it really was jaw dropping for its time. Real shame only me and bout 5 other played it all the way through, hehe. Guess its also because the combat is similair with the mechs tearing things up.

To be honest that's probably the closest I've got in a game in terms of feeling you could sway an entire battle in your favour just via your actions.

I'm expecting some 'Lord of the Rings' style battlefields on singleplayer Halo 3 before I even think about playing it. Anything less and it won't be living up to the hype IMO - no more bland copy+paste levels plz Bungie.

That said I bet the difficulty is sending many casuals off to easy mode, or even off the game altogether. Gear probably has a better 'normal' mode, that is to say, it's ridiculously easy and so suitable for most gamers.
The difficulty is certainly an odd one. It's extremely variable in my experience from the insultingly easy (peanut-brained sky pirates) to moments of pant-****ting anger. I'd agree about the Gears 'normal' mode - it was a decent enough challange if you suxored and my sister genuinely improved as she learned how to actually fight on normal. The abundance of checkpoints helped too.

I'm afriad I do agree that L.P. is rather mediocre so far. Run through snowy field, Akrid pop up, kill Akrid, snow pirates pop up, kill snow pirates while they go cheap and rocket you from afar, kill boss. The platforming elements are a reasonable diversion on foot but banal in the mechas. All that said, I love the boss battles: any game that puts up a health metre at the bottom of the screen for a boss battle is worthy of praise. For all that though, I'm only mission on 5 so I can't tar the whole thing yet. I hope it improves. Plus they've made Lee Byung-hun's face a bit weird on Wayne.

                          It's worth 7/10.

More coherent and gels better (in terms of game design) than Dead Rising, but features one of the most nonsensical, disconnected plots I've seen in a modern high-profile videogame. Yes, we all know the story is secondary but it could have been much better.

I'm glad to see Capcom are getting some deserved success in units sold though (2m as things stand), even if it's through games which aren't their most critically praised in recent times.

Hopefully it'll give them the resources to create more experimental output and they won't do a Sega on us all. Even with this in mind though, the likes of Lost Planet and Dead Rising are well-made and diverse in terms of expanding their portfolio.

edit: my bad. LP and Dead Rising combined have hit 2m.

7/10 or 8/10 sounds fair. Any higher than that would fail to recognise the games shortcomings, any lower would undeservedly put the game into the mid-range 'mediocre' catagory.

                            Brilliant game, if flawed.
A real parallel to Dead Rising in that it's a great concept executed with the typical amount of quality that we expect from Capcom, but the games also clearly highlight areas that need improvement in future titles.

Great to see them selling so well, if these were on any other platform they would probably have not done as well, so it's good to see Capcom games getting the attention they deserve.

Interesting that while Dead Rising is regarded as a big hit, Lost Planet has already matched it in sales. I think Dead Rising is the superior overall game, but I love both.

It's an 8 or 9 out of 10 for me. I love it, one of the best games on the 360 for me. The story is my only niggle, but it's pretty irrelevant.

I've got an awful, AWFUL feeling I'm going to regret my words in this thread you know.

For the first time ever, today on mission 6 suddenly...well it clicked a little bit. I still find things irritating and time will tell since I only had chance to do mission 6 and kill the boss. But, dare I say it I did actually enjoy the fight. I must admit that I like the boss fights, it's just the getting to them I dislike at times.

Still can't say I love or hate this, still at 6/10 for me, but if there's a few more good boss fights I'll up that to a 7/10.

The cutscenes are nice looking but what the ****? Worst story of recent times really with no proper continuity as such.
