can anyone suggest a good guidebook for this

There is a brady games guide book, I think amazon sell it now.

Keep checking vfdc for tutorials and guides in the upcoming weeks.

I fully agree that VF5 is the best fighter out there in terms of gameplay and depth, and it easily outclasses Tekken's 'dial a combo' system... but then arguably it always did.

Virtua Fighter always gave you more control and had more tactics, whereas with Tekken I felt that the gameplay was reduced to each player wheeling out their 'dial a combos' or watching their energy bars drain away helplessly as they fell foul to yet another juggle combo.

I just feel that having essentially invented the 3D fighting game and its mechanics, Sega are the ones best-placed to do it again considering the vast amount of extra CPU and graphical power they have at their disposal now. Therefore to take VF4 Evo and add on extra bits and pieces feels like something of a missed opportunity IMO.

I do wonder why AM2 turned their backs on the more extensive backdrops seen in VF3. While undulating terrain might annoy the VF purists, I thought expanding the arena beyond simple rings was a step in the right direction myself.

I never got chance to play VF3 at arcade, played the DC version and its the only version I dislike and found the AI very bad (way too easy).

The brady guide is available since Friday ince in USA (Play Asia are due to get them I ordered mine from a ebayer in USA). Their is also the excellent Japanese Black Book (I got that from a JPN ebayer). The problem with the black book is yes it is in japanese but it is worth it for the dvd you get with it which has about 2-3hours worth of video fights from a 3vs3 tournament. I didnt know whether to buy it or not but when it arrived on Thursday, well Ive watched it twice and the guide has become invaluable with the vfdc website (as that is where they get the moves from at vfdc even the frame date it all comes from the black book).

The Brady guide is susposed to be for the beginner to inter player, I bought them both as I have trouble with my memory (due to a coma I had) so suffer short term memory loss so to have a list of moves next to me to look at is great. You could just get a printer attached and printout the dojo at VFDC though.

Ive taken 144 pictures here of VF5 if anyone wants to check em out...

VF5 Im suprised how dynamically fluid it feels playing it now, Pai for example feels very supple in movement between pictures and her clothes you can actually see the fibres.

BTW I was just wondering what you guys think of the AI in this conversion?

I was over at virtuafighter.com last night reading through what the hardcore thought, and it seems many are dissapointed w/ the game in this area in the PS3 port.

              Thoughts?

I've been lurking there and they're hugely exaggerating the problem. It's not as good as Evo's AI, and doesn't consider some of the new moves and techniques exclusive to VF5, nor tech roll or guard escape as much. Which is of course a shame. But it still puts up a very good fight at hard level and above, so for the vast majority of players they're going to feel challenged by it and enjoy it - especially in the latter stages of quest mode.

The worst thing about the PS3 port is in fact the disgraceful omission of the excellent training mode from VF4. It's basically killing the possibility of new players learning about the nuances and techniques that make VF so bloody great. So lots of newbies are going to button mash and walk away totally unimpressed. Back to Tekken and DOA for them. Nice one SEGA!

                  Interesting.
I bought VF1-3 back in the day for the Sega consoles and I think I was fairly competent at em.

Missed out on VF4 cause I don’t like Playstation’s, but my chick got a PS2 recently so I picked up VF4 a few days ago to play while I wait for VF5/360.
Just the regular version not of VF4, not Evo.

Great game, I’m just trying to teach myself to get competent again. I have been spending time in the dojo, then just playing arcade. On my first go I got up to stage 12 in arcade, then got stuck. Today (my second session) I was playing crap and could not get past stage 8 of arcade.

Don’t laugh, my question is this-

If I keep playing VF4 will I get competent again and be able to complete arcade? Will the stuff like how to break stagger combos and side stepping at the right time eventually sink in?

                  Cheers

                    Hi,

I felt compelled enough to come out n voice out a different opinion.

Esstentially, there's 2 camps of unhappy consumers now.

                    1) The AI is bad...but we know the VS is the critical component of the game...so we're just telling the world the AI is bad (I'm in this camp since I can find verygood players to play against)

2)The AI is bad...so bad they've decided on not buying the product. Simply because they know they CANNOT find anyone else to play the game with. An EVO like AI was their saving grace and this is no longer an option.

I'm sorry, but what challenge does the AI give? I'm trying to find a challenge the AI can produce in this game apart from constantly guarding, and guarding.

I'm sorry, how am exaggerating the problem when I am calling out a specific FLAW in the single player mode? Think Final Fight except the AI don't do anything. Would the game still be fun for you?

I started the game since VF1...it's more than a game, it's a passion. Over here in asia, it's a BIG passion for us.

Because of my history and knowledge of game, this AI is simply frankly speaking, no challenge. Perhaps for people new to the game, they might find it tough. But once they become good at the game, they will come to the sheer understanding that the AI is poor. It misses combos, it doesn't attack well , it doesn't do this or that etc etc etc.

With the dumbed down training mode, players cannot even try out stuff they want to by going to quest mode because.........THE AI IS TOO STUPID.
Evo AI allowed players to test things out in a simulated live situation and recieve instant feedback. EVO AI allows players to try things, get punished immediately and allowed players to go back to the drawining board. It trains the reflexes of the players as well.

                    2006 (or was is 2005, i forgot)
At SBO , 3 players that plays exclusively at home formed a team and joined SBO under the name 1P, managed to beat a team of tsuchikumo, Arashi and Gerilla!!!!! These 3 were the winners of the first SBO tournament. If that's not further proof of a good AI that helped the players, I don't know what else it is.

Anway, back to topic, tt's not a complaint exclusive to VFDC, it's a complaint in Japan as well. Especially in the presence of the superior AI found in arcade!!!!!

Is the game worth buying if you have no other player to play against? I ask this because I hear a few people saying they only play VF due to playing against real players.

I believe so, the Quest mode is great single player.

This arrived this morning. Have just given it a quick blast and it looks real promising so far. The game looks beautiful and from what I've played of it the fight mechanics seem as excellent as I remember VF always being. Going to leave it now until they sort out the Sega stick situation as I've got plenty of other games to be playing and I want to play the game as it should be, with an arcade stick rather than the standard controller.

All of it will sink in. It may take some time but it will eventually all come together. Get VF4 EVO it's much more closer to 5 and has alot of useful tips on how to play VF.

You can find it for like ?2 somewhere now.

I think from my view if your a serious hardcore VF player the AI isnt that good at all, but if you a new to inter player the AI is fine.

Im personally learning all over again (due to illness I forget and Ive forgotten everything from the series) and I have actually gone back to the VF4 evo to train, but I found the AI good for me on VF5, much better than VF3tb on DC (only thing I remember is being able to beat that easily) but I aint a very good gauge for it.

It does need patching though simple as that and Sega need to sort the AI issues out for the more higher inter players and put the AI with harder routines. It really shouldnt be too hard for them to update, its just whether they will or conentrate on doing it for the 360 instead I dunno why they have dummed it down for the home version with the AI though for quest (Dural will still kick your head in in arcade though!), very odd?

Had a quick load of the US version, looks very nice.

The initial HDD load was a stroke of genius, talk about suspense! Took me back to these days (Requires sound)...

The only thing that hasn't so far met my expectations where the load times. Having installed on the HDD, I thought they may be at least as good as the Tekken's and DOA games of recent times.
