Had several games of this before tonights Liverpool game, thoughts so far...
Great fun. Some of you may have noticed my strong interest in this title, this is massively down to me being a big Battlefield 1942 fan (not BFV, BF2 or 2142 - although they ain't bad, BF1942 was solid all the way without the need of the bell n whistles the later sequels came with).
This Warhawk looked like it was gonna provide me with a true simplistic old Battlefield type game (but in 3rd person). From what I've played so far, it delivers.
You hop into a game (best to find a fairly populated one) and you're faced with numerous options. Take the closest base via a jeep? Zoom to a back base in a plane? Defend a base whilst sitting off in a AA gun whilst enjoying a real world beverage (can be some time before something comes in - these maps are big)? Go straight down the middle in a tank?
I've only played Zones (like Conquest) mode at the moment, but I imagine there's a good laugh in store when playing CTF (as different tactics are required of course).
The handling of planes is great. Reminds me of Starfox a little. The use of the right analog stick for looping/barrel rolling (in flying mode) is a nice touch.
Other nice little touches for vehicles are the powerslide for the jeeps (press accel and brake together), and the option to flip up the lid on tanks to unsuspecting infantry to unleash with your on-foot weapon (rocket launcher is a good one).
There are a couple of things I'd like to see implemented in any possible future updates such as squads and maybe bots for offline practice, but at the moment I can deffo live without.
Definately worth 20quid I reckon.
May not be everyone, but if like me, you like big map, multi vehicle, doesn't take itself too serious shooters (like Battlefield 1942).. then give it a gander.
Some tips for starting out:
I recommend creating a local game to test drive the controls. I ended up knocking the aiming sensitivity up to about 70% as it started out a bit sluggish. Also, was it just me or was default soldier controls set to inverted? I changed that straight away.
Whilst starting out be sure to read the tool tips.
Tips on weapons:
If you're planning to stay on ze ground, I recommend arming yourself with a rocket launcher (and extra nades), the machine gun in ths game seems (annoyingly) weak. Don't forget the rocket launcher has a lock-on mode on vehicles if you hold down the fire button.
The holding down on the shoot button to lock-on to vehicles can e easiy missed on your first few outing if you've jumped straight in. Rocket launcher, missles on planes (L1) and the missle AA gun all have this feature.
