I've finished ep2 now and I thought it was awesome, although I did find the default sensitivity ridiculously low, I had to like triple it on both axis, must be all the halo3 I've been playing or something, anyway once i'd sorted that I found the aiming fine and the only thing I found annoying controls wise was driving.

I think i've sussed out my problem with the asian version crashing and it's not ideal.
If I play any title from a fresh boot I cannot load another title if I exit. I have to wait about 8 hours approximately for the console to sort itself out then I can proceed to play other titles. I woke up this morning after a stressful night of crashing and portal loaded fine. I decided to play it non-stop and finished it in 2 hours. Proper wicked

Yeah, the voices in the game (not just the computer but those gun turrets too) are deffinitley a big part of why it is so much fun.
The computers comments throughout the last level, and particuarly for that fantastic boss fight are just down right hilarious, the guy who said it wasnt as funny as it think its it clearly hadnt completed the game.
Although he also said the graphics of half life 2 were shabby compared to the PC version, which makes no sense seeing as it is virtualy the PC version and may even look slightly better (in HD at least). Combat Controls seem pretty good to me too, its a slower paced game than Halo in respect to its combat and the developers seem to know this as even on the PC I had to up the sesitivity I think. Driving is awkward, but then I thought it was on the PC too.Last edited by rmoxon; 20-10-2007, 16:02.

Just finished Portal and I have to say it was some of the freshest gaming I've had in a long time. Utterly brilliant. What a change from run-and-gun games. It may only have been a couple of hours but it was possibly the best couple of hours gaming in many years.
The sense of progression... of satisfaction at completing the puzzles... of flying through one portal and firing another to fly through even further... oh and THAT song! Genius.
I tried listening to the first set of developer commentaries on it and Gabe Newell at the beginning says something like this is only the start of where they think they can take this sort of gaming.
Would it be too much to ask to incorporate it into future episodes of Half Life?! As Oliver would say, "Please Valve, can I have some more?"

Portal is genius - HL2 though, the aiming is just all over - I thought I'd give it another go after playing on the PC moons ago - I'm finding jumping a real issue, and aiming can be a pain too, it seems that it's not really been tweaked that well for the pad, and I'm struggling with it. This is putting me off.
I did have some good games of TF2 this evening though, and that really shows the difference in controls ( as does portal ). It's clear that these are better tweaked for the pad to me.
I've not played Ep1 or 2 yet, so I will give those a go. My TF2 games tonight have been far less laggy and I haven't dropped either, so alls good.

I think a Portal gun in HL2 would be too powerful, in that it would overwhelm all other aspects of the design. Levels and puzzles would have to be designed completely around the gun... so essentially it would become Portal 2 "Now with 10 other weapons you don't need to use!"
I guess Valve could make it work. But at most, I would expect it to be restricted to a self-contained scenario, a la Nova Prospekt.

The aiming is a little eratic, but I remember it being a lot worse on the original Xbox. It must be better now, I'm actually shooting people rather than either side of them!!!

I'd forgotten just how good a game HL2 is. Simply stunning and its set piece after set piece, pretty unrelenting. I think the game has transferred to the console very well, especially the controls, but I'm finding the aiming a bit erratic. Graphics have aged a wee bit, but the sense of scale is awesome. Can't wait to get through it and on to the extra episodes.
