Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction (PS3)

lucky me, my copy turned up today

first off, the problems some have encountered trying to do the mandatory install did`nt happen for me. 2 minutes later it had placed 421mb of data into the system folder on the PS3 HDD. firmware 1.94 installed fine as well onto my HK machine. if you press the PS button it allows you to select rumble on and off, but did`nt notice anything new apart from that.

    onto the game -

the first level is from the demo, but appears a lot more smoother. it`s hard to get across just how utterly lush, vibrant and downright beautiful it is. when the screen is cluttered with waves of enemies there is not even a trace of slowdown, which is very welcome indeed. as you progress you notice all the little things going on amidst the large scale chaos. destroying commandos releases the pilots from the helmet section in a orange goo bubble, as you watch them going wide-eyed when they see you approach. or the way giant building are destroyed as you grind along a rail beside them. its amazing when you add in the fact that there are minimal loading times which never take you out of the action for very long. it feels like nothing but pure win as you play.

cut scenes carry the story nicely, very light hearted and bursting with humor. i laughed out loud at one in particular involving clank. it`s nice having a game giving you a belly laugh and not taking itself too seriously. ratchet and clank taking the piss out of the baddie when he introduces himself

    as percival

was excellent, with some quality sniggering going on.

control feels improved from the demo. the over the shoulder aim (press R1 then aim with the right analogue stick) is very welcome and allows for more accurate shooting to compliment the usual run n gun action. of course it slightly leaves you open by being static for a short period of time, but the plus is it stops you from being picked off by stronger enemies who may be either flying or on high. also the ability to invert the camera which was absent from the demo (well at at rate, i could never find an option to change it over) is included in the full game. quick select of your different weapons is handed by selecting triangle and then moving the left analogue stick to chose your desired weapon.

upgrades happen automatically as you use them, so this`ll reward those who have a handful of favourites and stick with them. i`ve obviosly not unlocked anything of note just yet, but judging by the sheer amount of pages devoted to it in the quick select menu (sure i counted 3!) they`ll start coming thick and fast. little ? boxes dot the landscape at points and they can give you any manner of goodies. from multiplyers that add the amount of bolts you may pick up or extra powerups, it encourages you to explore to seek them out.

    i`m currently up to the

    2nd world, Planet Cobalia

and have just encountered my first boss fight. as expected it was`nt terribly challenging but the quality of the visuals yet again just hit you right between the eyes. those quips made in the gaming press about the quality of animation being akin to a pixar movie don`t feel that far of the mark once you witness them first hand.

Mine has just turned up now.

Any idea what the firmware update does? Maybe it's just rumble support?

    EDIT:
Just started it up now so will post proper thoughts later. The first thing that's obvious is that the demo cut scenes are now in HD and run without a stutter. There is only about 1 or 2 seconds of a pause between cut scenes and gameplay which is an improvement over the demo.

Just pressed the PlayStation button and there is an option for rumble in there now.

Should also point out that I did have the install problems at first. I deleted the demo and it worked fine.

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

Got my copy today from the lovely people at Movietyme.com and have been playing it for a few hours now, I can honestly say this is a fun game. Anyone who says this is just for kids is out of their mind, I think pretty much anyone can enjoy this game even us big kids

If you have played the demo (or any other iteration in the R&C series) you will know what to expect and be right at home from the off. It is pretty much your usual platform game elevated by its great weapons and gadgets. You can buy new weapons and even upgrade your current ones, I have only played about 3 or 4 hours but have got some decent weapons/gadgets and have them upgraded pretty well. Mainly due to the fact that the currency which you use to do all this stuff is readily available. Kill an enemy or bash a crate and you get nuts/bolts which are your currency in the game. The only diversion I had so far from the usual platforming stuff is one spaceship fight. I presume these will happen sometimes when your travelling from planet to planet as that is what triggered this one fight. This was a nice diversion from the platforming, even if it did feel a little out place. Think of a simplified version of the Star Wars Rogue Squadron games and that is pretty much what these spaceship fights are like. They are not done brilliantly but they are not done poorly either, they are....ok.

Graphically the game looks lovely, environments and characters all look great. The back of the box quotes a review "the first game to truly deliver the long sought 'you are playing a Pixar movie' experience", I would, for the most part, have to agree with that. It has the humor and the characters but its not at the level of looking like a Pixar movie, looks lovely (uses the PS3's power well) but not quite at that level yet.

From what I have played so far, I would recommend this to anyone who likes their platforming games (or has a PS3 for that matter) as you will definately enjoy it. Thumbs up from me

Just to doublecheck before I order - the US version works fine on a UK machine, right?

Have they optomised it better over the demo as it was a tiny bit framey for me? It gave me really bad motion sickness first time I tried but once I got to the rail bit on another go later (with some buassem to help!) it calmed down more. I ended up liking it that much Ive ordered it and I never liked em on PS2.

You do have options over the control and the camera in the full game. I advise everybody to go for the 2 stick 1st person type controls as there is a LOT of shooting involved in this later on!

You can invert the view too.

The framerate is fine in the full game, it's been silky smooth all the time from what I've noticed.

Just got the game, looks good and after a little while the controls became second nature. Whats really nice is just everything going on in the backround. The bad? Well this is my first Ratchet game and frankly, I have nfc whats going on half the time, the game goes from one vista to the next with little or no infomation. I dont mind it so much as I dont really care too much about ratchet or clank - but some kind of infomation would have helped to fill in the gaps for new players.
