lucky me, my copy turned up today
first off, the problems some have encountered trying to do the mandatory install did`nt happen for me. 2 minutes later it had placed 421mb of data into the system folder on the PS3 HDD. firmware 1.94 installed fine as well onto my HK machine. if you press the PS button it allows you to select rumble on and off, but did`nt notice anything new apart from that.
onto the game -
the first level is from the demo, but appears a lot more smoother. it`s hard to get across just how utterly lush, vibrant and downright beautiful it is. when the screen is cluttered with waves of enemies there is not even a trace of slowdown, which is very welcome indeed. as you progress you notice all the little things going on amidst the large scale chaos. destroying commandos releases the pilots from the helmet section in a orange goo bubble, as you watch them going wide-eyed when they see you approach. or the way giant building are destroyed as you grind along a rail beside them. its amazing when you add in the fact that there are minimal loading times which never take you out of the action for very long. it feels like nothing but pure win as you play.
cut scenes carry the story nicely, very light hearted and bursting with humor. i laughed out loud at one in particular involving clank. it`s nice having a game giving you a belly laugh and not taking itself too seriously. ratchet and clank taking the piss out of the baddie when he introduces himself
was excellent, with some quality sniggering going on.
control feels improved from the demo. the over the shoulder aim (press R1 then aim with the right analogue stick) is very welcome and allows for more accurate shooting to compliment the usual run n gun action. of course it slightly leaves you open by being static for a short period of time, but the plus is it stops you from being picked off by stronger enemies who may be either flying or on high. also the ability to invert the camera which was absent from the demo (well at at rate, i could never find an option to change it over) is included in the full game. quick select of your different weapons is handed by selecting triangle and then moving the left analogue stick to chose your desired weapon.
upgrades happen automatically as you use them, so this`ll reward those who have a handful of favourites and stick with them. i`ve obviosly not unlocked anything of note just yet, but judging by the sheer amount of pages devoted to it in the quick select menu (sure i counted 3!) they`ll start coming thick and fast. little ? boxes dot the landscape at points and they can give you any manner of goodies. from multiplyers that add the amount of bolts you may pick up or extra powerups, it encourages you to explore to seek them out.
i`m currently up to the
and have just encountered my first boss fight. as expected it was`nt terribly challenging but the quality of the visuals yet again just hit you right between the eyes. those quips made in the gaming press about the quality of animation being akin to a pixar movie don`t feel that far of the mark once you witness them first hand.
