PES 2008/Winning Eleven Play Maker 2008 (Wii)

This arrived this morning, only had a few games so far after sitting through the basics tutorial you are confronted with after booting the game, but the games I've had so far have been great fun.

At the moment, this game looks like PES/WE (on PS2), but it plays like a different beast altogether. Approach it with a traditional PES/WE head (like I did) and you'll have a bit of a head scratching time. The tutorials quickly give you a taste of how things work, so you slowly start to apply the moves you've learned.

It's kick-off, you're on the ball, aim the on-screen reticle at a player or space around him and press B (trigger) on the Wii-remote to pass. Double tapping B will result in a lob pass. Great for switching the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, or through balls over the top, providing you've aimed at a good amount of space in front of you target player.

Passing feels great. It's really fun.

Shooting is done simply by quickly swiping the nunchuck in a sideways motion. So far, I've tried swiping outwards, which works, although doesn't seem to influence the shot type or direction... the results seem random. Maybe the focus is on the play making? Will investigate more at a later time.

Defending is tricky. I'm not too sure what is the best approach at the moment. I need to look into it more. For now, what seems to be working, is when your opponents are on the ball, aim your reticle and press A button on potential threatening players. Players that are near the guy in possession who he could pass to or others you may think will attempt to run into space. By clicking on these opposing players, your nearest player will mark them closely making your opponents passing options thin. Click on the guy in possession and your player nearest will attempt to challenge him. Any of your players who you have given these defensive commands to will have a blue circle at their feet. Players close enough to make a challenge for the ball will have that circle change colour to red. With the circle red, you now have the option to make a sliding challenge by holding Z on the nunchuck and swiping it (Leaving them would just let them continue to apply pressure). Just make sure your player making the challenge isn't behind your opponent

Also, whilst defending you have the option to quickly spring the offside trap, this is done by simply swiping the Wii-remote in an upwards motion. It works great.

Movement whilst on the ball takes some time to get used to. You can move your player using the nunchuck stick, this will move your player at a normal jogging pace. Hold Z whilst moving to knock the pace down a notch. Getting into a sprint with the ball is a different kettle of fish. Firstly, you can move your player without even touching the nunchuck stick... aiming your reticle to a space on the pitch whilst keeping hold of A button will make your player on the ball move there. If you're aiming several yards away from your player, the pace he moves will be at the normal jogging pace, aim your reticle near to the edge of the screen and you'll break into a sprint pace. It's tricky, but it does work.

You can easily get players off-the-ball to move anywhere you want, by aiming at them, holding A and dragging a path for them. Good for planning a through ball move.

The game feels like an RTS at times, but it's been a very enjoyable experience so far. I definately need loads more practice and need to find out the best strategies, tricks etc. It can be frustrating too, but hopefully after time these will be ironed away.

As I've said, haven't had too much time with it, so I ain't tried the online or the 'Champions Road' option.

I think this comes out in PAL land in a week or two as well. I highly recommend it, even if PES isn't your thing.

Random vid - hopefully will give you an idea of what I've been harpin' on about...

Is this the Japanese version you're playing mate? Was thinking of getting it but am worried by text heavy tutorials. Not that it's usually matter in a Pro Evo/Winning Eleven, but this one looks a lot trickier!

This is one of the few reasons I regret not having a PAL Wii - if the JPN version is too text heavy I'll be put off and likely won't be out in the US for ages.

It is the JPN version and it is heavily drenched in Japanese texts. I'm managing well at the moment, but I'm definately in need of finding out some specifics, hopefully I leanr more later when I play on the practice field, if not.. forums I think I'll be picking up the PAL version and selling this on in a week or so when it comes out.

You're hand held through the tutorials, which helps.

Wow, I missed that one. Didn't think U.S would get it so soon, they're always left out for a few months. I would love to have a peek at your manual. Scan me it NOoooW!

Yeah it's strange that the US got it so early. Anything in particular you want to know? Your impressions sound like you have most of the controls sorted.

I'm not sure really. In case I'm missing something really. What about skills. The marseille roulette, drag backs etc. I'd really like to find out what each button does. I know there basic functions, but they may become something else in combination with other buttons.

There was one tutorial where I had to mark 3 attacking players, after that I had to press C on an open space... had no idea what that was doing. C button function? Fakes?

                Is it worth buying ?

I got PES 2008, PES 2007 for XBOX 360, WE6FE for Gamecube and Winning Eleven 10 for Playstation 2.

I'm really enjoying it. It feels like a different game, but in a good way. Like I said, RTS footy

PES 2008 Wii is out on Thursday.

Hoolak, how well does dribbling work?

It works well as far as I can tell. You'll find yourself using the nunchuck stick to help get yourself out of tight spots. You may find yourself switching to the pointing when you have space. I originally thought you have to point to the edge of the screen to break into a sprint, but after a paractice session I figured out that when pointing your player (on the ball) to direct him, if you hold up on the nunchuck stick you will run. Left and right on the stick will do sidesteps and down will stop the ball dead.

You really have to spend a bit of time with it. At the moment, I'm loving it.
The champoins Road mode puts your team (crappy Master League Minanda and the boys) on a tour. Selecting alternative paths on the way if you like etc. There's no transfer system in place, but what they have (I like) instead is after you win a match you are given the option to choose one card from many faced down cards with the defeated team's badge on the back of each. When you choose a card it will be turned over showing you a player from the team you can now add to your own squad. Makes it all feel a bit Nintendoey, but I welcome it.

Will get the PAL version of this as trying to get a game online against Japanese has been non-existent. I can't even see/connect to anything. I imagine this with 2 players will be even more fun.

Different, but I'm glad. I have the PS3 one for Master League etc, I can get the PSP one for portable pick-up-and-play and this one for a different experience but still the same basic game. Sorted!

When you score a great goal do you still get that quality pro evo feeling? Also, how easy would it be for someone who has never played it before to just pick it up and play a game?

Yeah, It can feel rewarding if you've scored from a good bunch of planned moves i.e Running down the centre of the field, wingers either side of you, you drag one in making a run, the defender follows him, but instead you've quickly dragged in the other winger and threaded him a nice through ball.

You still get scrappy goals too, mind.

As for easy to pick up, I would say, someone who hasn't played PES before would have just as good chance against someone who is a seasoned PES player. Provided both get the hang of the controls, then all you need is a bit of a footy head.

Having played this for a while now, I don't really think its going to work out for me.

Obviously a big fan of all ISS > PES6 (not next gen 2008) but the only good thing about this game is the passing.

It's absolutely fantastic to see space or pick out a man and be able to hit it just right.

                              However, my praise ends there.

Firstly, I don't feel like I'm in full control. On PS2 2008 and previous PES', I found that the only limit of what I wanted to do was my imagination. Working space, beating a man, a killer through ball - all leading up to that explosion that is a Pro Evo goal. This is not present here.

Waggling the nunchuck for some random shot is not what PES should be about. It's just not satisfying. It seems to be a case of waggle and hope.

Similarly, defending is a chore instead of an art form. Like positioning your man on the line just as that shot comes in. Crys of "great defending" and "how the **** did you get that" are now gone from a Pro Evo session. It's just not fluid or instinctive in Play Maker.

Don't mean to sound big headed, but I pride myself on my tactics, defence and keen footballing mind when playing PES - but in this version, it's like everything I knew, everything I loved, is down the toilet.

I'm really sorry I don't like this game, I gave it time, but I'd just rather use the PS2 pad. I will give it more time and give it another go, but I just don't think it's compatible with me.
