Metal Gear Solid 4

Got all the way to act 5 last night, will aim to finished up this weekend. Overall the game is great, an 8/10 score from me. Act 3 was dire but the others were all good. Act 4 was a great surprise to me and one I enjoyed rather a lot. Issues for me are the over long cutscenes, at times it just feels needless. The love scenes are jarring too and the story is over complicated. Also all of the characters that die so so in an overly dramatic manor.

Better pacing would have made the game much better.

It's no masterpiece. Kojima is superb at times but the pacing is all over the place. Resident Evil 4 managed the spectacular without the endless cutscenes. Can't wait to do the final act mind.

You'd better stop before the end if you're hating the cutscenes - normally I have no complaints about that with MGS but even I think 4 overdid it at the end. There was a perfect place to stop but it just kept on going...

Why would I stop after completing 4 of the 5 acts and enjoying it? I certainly don't hate the cutscenes, they are just awfully paced.

If memory serves me correct the last act has a lot of cutscenes with one alone being an hour in length, make sure you have an evening spare for it.

I started replaying this before Metal Gear Rising. I definitely want to finish it again, I can't really remember much of it at all and the last time I played it was on release which is nearly 5 years ago now! Still need to finish Rising too...

Finished it. Disappointed with the end. Some really corny scenes that just don't work that well. The voice acting seems to fall apart whenever love is involved. The end also didn't pan out how I expected and I feel Kojima took the easy way out.

Some nice surprises though and the last act was generally really good. The last boss fight was epic and they really know how to please fans in this respect.

8/10 and the worst game in the main series.


For me, the series goes in release order in terms of quality. I still adore the first game the most, not through nostalgia either. The second game I feel is wonderful to play, I love the bosses, I love the visuals but the ending is weak.
MGS3 has an amazing setting and so many brilliant ideas, clunky control let it down at times and I got rather frustrated with it. The 3DS game is sublime to play though.

Started this up after a full install so I'm not hampered by the previous loads. This is the only main series entry that I've only ever gone through the once which was on release so this is quite fresh to go back to. Booting it up is quite surprising as though there are better looking games out there it's amazing how smooth it is most of the time and how well its aged. There's a ton of little touches which are brilliant to the game and though not the best gameplay mechanics in the world it is none the less by far the best entry to actually play, each area has loads of approach options too. So far I'm loving it, well, when it's not doing 20 min cutscenes anyway

After a marathon sesh on this last night I'm now deep in Act 4 again, still evokes so many memories and is the games peak for series fans easily. Such a shame Act 5 lets it down.

I still feel MGS3 is the peak. Selectable camo, complex feeding system, and a complex healing system.

Proper complex gaming, with many sub-systems.

I used to get shot on purpose just so I could pull bullets.
