Didn't know it did that, that's kind of cool - I take it that works for any headset (sans coolness of playing a MGS game with a MGS peripheral)?

Are the head sets available in Game or Gamestation stores?

No John they won't be OK. You and I both know that the game will actually be better with an MGS branded head set by approximately 5%.

Don't let J0e know but I've heard rumours that teh official one gives you the option to listen to the speech in Japanese or maybe I've just made that up. Something along those lines anyway.

Otacon: "i used to be an anime Otaku"

              Naomi: "Oh...."

Hmm, well cant fault that true female reaction there, brilliant writing

Just started Act3 - what a game so far. I love the combat, the controls and everything MGS related. The story doesn't quite make a lot of sense to me, im hoping it will be clearer later on - Im also worried about the game's length - anyone clocked it know how many acts there are? Finally - the audio in this game tops Crysis for me. Im not just talking about music, but the sound is amazing. (Spoiler) on the first boss 2nd phase, the audio on my 5.1 made me actually feel in some horrible war zone - it was engrossing stuff (end spoiler)

Anyway - I love the secrets in this game - spoiler inc:

(Spoiler) So I was tracing Naomi in Act2 via footprints and failed - so I backtracked, when I went back to the river there was a crop circle I didnt notice first time around - I went to it and Cambell started talking in this mystical voice about being abducted by aliens. Was very weird, very cool, very spooky - and I got Drebin points for it! (end spoiler)

Depends why you hated them. If you hated the mechanics, then you may like this as it's really been tweaked and plays so much better as a result. If you hated the overblown plots and long cutscenes then yes, you will probably hate this too.

There are 5 Acts, so I reckon on about 20 hours at my current rate of play. Better than some games which clock in at under 10 hours.

Just some first impressions. I don't know what other people are saying because I'm being militant about avoiding spoilers, but there aren't any here. A few observations:
                          • Installs for console games must die. Painfully.
                          • The controls are a huge and much-needed improvement on the occasionally ridiculous button-juggling that you had to perform in MGS2 and 3.
                          • It looks really impressive. Not as flawless as early videos might have had you believe - the occasionally iffy texture, wavy shadow syndrome - but it's really solid, with a great sense of things being real, if that makes sense. Other games might throw the flashy effects around, but that doesn't mean they look as convincing as this.
                          • My TV is getting a 1080p signal, which is certainly being upscaled (you can tell by the text, which isn't as sharp as something native 1080p like the XMB), but it's good that they're supporting resolutions across the board.
                          • The official licences like the fully functional iPod and the fact that the dirty magazines are actually Playboy made me chuckle. Nice attention to detail, although I'm not sure why he's using an iPod Classic in 2014. He does say he's

                            not good with gadgets

                            , I suppose.
                          • Octocamo is a great system. As much as I enjoyed MGS3, it got very tiresome to pop into the menu every time I moved from grass to tree or whatever. However implausible (they don't notice a floating, grey-haired head?), this is much more elegant.
                          • I chuckled at the

                            box vs drum

                            cut-scene
                          • Monkey!

I like what I've seen so far, in any case. As long as I can keep enjoying the story (I loved it in MGS3, so there's no reason why not) I can overlook Kojima's occasional indulgences.

You can also shake the controller during the cutscene to reset it too, which is cool!

A character in Arc 1 is probably the funniest character to appear in the entire series. I can't wait to see what happens later on.

Just thought I would add a few impressions from an MGS beginner - having initially felt concerns about whether I would like MGS4, having now played it i'm finding it to be excellent. Have been playing it on the easy mode as I thought it would be more fun and accessible, and I can always go back and play it through on a tougher setting later on.

But have to say the cinema stuff is absolutely superb, really exciting and watchable. And the in game action is straight forward and intuitive. The camoflage suit for example is activated just by pressing up against the wall using the triangle button, and you can cycle through the weapons by the R2 (I think) button, Ive been dousing people with the petrol bombs and burning them, its a bit sick but fun nonethe less.
Am only very early on in, but it is really exciting to play and reminds me in some ways like a NG type game. It uses the same perspective and the control system seems similar and quite arcadey.
Anyway definitely the best game for me so far on PS3 - absolutely outstanding.
