Even with my contempt for Kojima's writing I can't believe he'd be so daft as to have missed that.

Didn't it get explained in the ending sequences etc that

Naomi was actually killed by FoxDie?

    Ugh, confusing!

      Ugh, confusing!

IIRC, the new FOXDIE was set up to kill EVA, Ocelot, and Big Boss (i.e. the surviving Patriots who were opposing Zero/the AIs), which it did when they came into contact with Snake

      .

For anyone who's waiting, there's a press release out that says the PAL version of the MGS4 database will be out on the 26th (Thursday). There's something wrong about trumpeting the fact that you're brilliant enough to bring out a downloadable a week after the rest of the world

ja, thanks. i've also noticed that you can unlock certain bonus items such as a bandana for a no kills-run. it's debatable though if achievements and emblems are enough of an incentive for everyone. however, it's a worthy addition for hardcore Metal Gear fans i guess.

Finished this over the weekend. Great game - a technical marvel, but I do have one major gripe.

          Massive story spoilers

Bigger MGS fans than me have said that Hideo Kojimi has tied up every single loose end with this installment, and I can well believe it. Unless I went for a piss, the only thing he didn't seem to explain is how Snake can fit numerous handguns, an assortment of rifles, various explosive devices, RPGs, a rail gun, a cardboard box and a big **** off barrel in his pockets.

It can't be just me who thought that the story suffered because of it, though. The first time I thought Raiden was dead I did genuinely give a ****, the tenth time not so much. I assumed it was just a bit of mischief making when it was first reported that the game contained cutscenes that were 90 minutes long, and while I didn't have a stopwatch, I honestly thought that Naomi's death scene would never end. Man, did that go on.

I mean, there's something not right when you wish characters you first met twenty years ago would just hurry up and die. But, by far the worst, was Snake's final scene in the cemetery. I actually felt cheated when it turned out that he didn't suicide himself. If Kojimi is to be believed, and this is Snake's final day out in the sun, then that was an incredibly moving way to go out...but NO, Snake can't die, because there's still another half an hour of exposition to get through. Dramatic moments like that were ruined for me, because Kojimi, just like Peter Jackson with Return of the King, was reluctant to just let them be.

I know from doing act 1 with no kills (got to end of act 1 last night in 5hours reliased Id killed frogs and they counted doh so went back and redid the entire act in 2hours zero kills) you got 20k drebin points for it. For me if it even recognises something like that than its worth me doing. Again with MGS you play it how you want I guess. Be descent to see a patch or substence edition with more in for things like that though.

I switched off after act 2 installed last night though as 7hours in one evening had made me worn out

I finished it for the 2nd time last week with a full no alert run, got the stealth camo as a prize. cam in at 5h 45 min.

I loved the game so very much to the point of finding it unbelievably difficult to go back and appreciate the other games I was playing before I started MGS4, those being Dark Sector and LEGO Indiana Jones, which goes to show how much labour of love has been poured into the experience.

I only have two complaints though:

After all of those trailers before the game was released showing a very strong 'Snake will commit suicide' direction, it never happened and I was - to be quite frank - disappointed about that.

I was quite shocked and taken aback by the Zero and Big Boss appearance in the closing scenes but after Otacon's rather heartbreaking 'Snake has had a hard life' speech, I thought it would be fitting for Snake to die; his final grace in other words but no, it didn't (unfortunately) happen.

Secondly, when Snake had his second or third CODEC call from Raiden in the second Act, he went on about how Snake should get through the battlefield and find out where Naomi went by following her footsteps.

The reason why I disliked it is because Snake was answering back to Raiden when he suggested ideas and hints as to how Snake should get through the particular section. It seemed very convoluted and patronising for Snake to answer back about something he has done in all the other games; it felt out of place and unnecessary.

Other than that, it gets the full 10 from me.

There won't be any other game quite on the level like MGS4 this generation. Full stop.

p.s. I enjoyed reading concept's and other peoples feelings toward this game; the amount of love you spread and share is the reason why I love this place.

AM doing the same but a no alert no kill run...

Can't seem to finish Act 2 w/o getting a kill... Is brilliantly tense though, no alert MGS gaming is great fun!

What do you do when you get an alert then reload the save?

Just that on my first try everytime I got alerted I would let myself get killed and let it reload and noticed at end it all counted (another reason I restarted). I did do act 1 genuinly without a single alert last night though all way thru.

Anyway thats net done for day Im going in from act 2

Dazzyman - yeah, restart if caught, that way you also get bonuses for no continue etc etc.

People probably know by now but...spoilers?

Yes you do. I posted this a while back which tells you everything that is unlockable and how to get them. There's loads there but be careful you don't spoil stuff by reading it.

I felt the same way about that mate

I just felt that if they'd cut out all the crap with big boss at the end and snake had just popped himself in the head it would of had a lot more impact as an ending, was pretty much the only disappointment for me story wise.

Basically summarises everything I was saying a couple days ago. The dramatic impact of everything that has transpired gets totally blootered out of the mind with the Big Boss speel and if Kojima had just spent an extra 5 minutes giving Snake a beautiful suicide scene then it would have delivered a much more fitting end to his story.

Instead, we are left to convince ourselves its the right ending when quite clearly a simpler and more emotional note would have worked much better!!
