Put a couple of hours into this last night. I see what people mean about Sebenco Climb - can be very tricky, especially with other ships in play...

Are people using the double shift to get around the corners or letting go of thrust - I can't seem to decide which works better!

Other than that - enjoying it even more now that the speed is hotting up a bit. Got Gold on Zone for Chengouko Project as well surprisingly easily - just that one nasty hairpin and a blinding track other than that

Enjoying this a lot for a mere £12 - the Summer of Downloads has been good to us.

I'm using Assegai on that track and, as long as you start wide and turn in early then get onto the relevant airbrake, none of the corners themselves are too tricky (Rapier).

I never take my finger off of the X button!

Trying to gold the Ubermall Time Trial in the 4th set of Campaign levels but it seems my choice of Feisar i lettng me down. Just doesn't seem fast enough. I was really hoping to go through the whole Campaign with a single team too.

Totally addicted to this now. Have stopped playing LBP even!
Got all golds in the first 2 categories and am fairly proficient at Rapier speed. Phantom is another matter however. I think that at 38 it's maybe too fast for me now!

I've been using AG Systems but am thinking of switching to Piranha for the extra speed.

I've managed to get to the 4th set of campaign levels, all gold's so far, all with Feisar too but it's getting tricky. I'm wondering about using some other craft to gain a little more speed but I just love the twitchy handling of Feisar. My other issue is that playing online is taking me away from furthering single player .

Number45's right, never take your finger off 'X'!! I just use the appropriate air brakes for Sebenco Climb and hit all the the speed pads.

I tend to use Piranha for the more sweeping tracks, but the tighter ones are an absolute nightmare until you are 100% comfortable with the tracks and the ship itself.

If you like twitchy handling, try the Assegai. I've used that and Piranha almost exclusively, switching to EG-X on the odd occasion that it seems like a mix of the two might suit me better.

As for online... all the talk of bragging and trash talking is exactly why I don't play often online.

Yeah, I was stuck trying to get a gold on one of the tracks in my AG because over the laps i would consistently miss 3 or 4 pads. I switched to Piranha, still missed the pads (more in fact) but got gold on my first go. it was a sweeping track mind as you say.

The problem is that it's clear that different ships are better for different circuits but swapping between ships all the time throws me out my comfort zone. I like the look of the last unlockable ship but haven't actually unlocked it yet. The max speed and 10% increase in boost and handling over the Piranha might just be enough. I don't recall but I guess it must take a big hit on durability in order to gain those 2 stats.

                EDIT:
Some turns on some tracks seem to be impossible in the Piranha unless you actually slow down a fair bit by lifting X and double air braking. Does this seem right or am I just lacking technique?

Could be right as some of the ships handle like dogs. I use the Assegai for everything because it is so twitchy and really good handling. Briefly tried another one that was faster with worse handling and hated it because I felt like I was slowing down and using airbrake too much in the corners.

So can you double airbrake the? By double tapping it to do the side shift and just holding it down after to brake to the side, never even tried that before!

Yeah, it basically allows you to shift into the corner and then airbrake as normal. I've not needed it up until this point, but I know it's something that I used a fair bit in Pulse (When I used Piranha exclusively).

Cool, I shall try that later then. Probably gonna be more useful when in Rapier and Phantom.

Mmm... yeah, think I'll give the Assegai and Piranha a try.

I played online last night with some peeps from here and had a good laugh...well, no trash talk as no-one has headsets but it was good fun anyway, maybe worth a try?

Made a horrible discovery this evening...

When I got the game first thing I did was go for a test run as I'd never played any Wipeout before, then turned off the pilot assist as I wanted to get used to the real handling. Last few days I've been slogging away at the campaign mode, and now I've found myself involved in pretty tough rapier class races.

I went into the pause menu tonight and - shock horror - pilot assist was ON.. WTF!! Which means all this time I've spent learning the game has been wasted, I'm back to square one with no idea how to get around the track!! Worse than that, because I'm at square one in terms of skill but on the 4th campaign at rapier class in terms of progress ><

I didn't notice it felt strange because I'm totally unfamiliar with Wipeout, but I guess it explains my lap time weirdness. So with the assist off I can't even complete a race without exploding. Good grief.

How exactly DO you get round hairpins in wipeout? Is it a case of letting go of thrust? Zone mode would lead me to believe that's not the case (and in practice if I do let go, I come to a dead stop while everyone else instantly overtakes me).

Are you supposed to just use the airbrakes? That usually shafts me on exiting the corner, so are you supposed to hold one airbrake to turn, then both together on the exit or something? AAARGH so pissed off....

                          Comment

You can always go back over the existing events (Or run some custom racebox events) to build up your familiarity without the assists.

But yeah, just using the airbrakes for the corners. Shouldn't ever be a need to let up on the gas - if you're coming out too wide you're probably coming into the corners too narrow and airbraking too late. Remember it effectively moves you sideways, so you can point the nose into the turn (To the point where you think you might hit the barrier) and the airbrake will move you out enough to avoid it and you'll find yourself exiting the corner fine, usually around the middle of the track in all but the very tightest of bends.

It's unlike any other racer to be honest, you'll need to get the hang of it through practice.

EDIT: This is for tight corners only, obviously. One thing I'm guilty of is using the airbrakes too often.

All golds in first 4 events now, it certainly is getting harder!

PS - I had some mega 's at Darwock when I read that, poor chap. Just stick with it and you'll learn eventually mate, deffo go back down and practice on Venom/Flash first though.

I'm desperately trying to stick to Feisar to get the Loyalty trophy, but I think it's reached a point where it's not going to be possible! Does loyalty reduce if you use another catagory?
