The only thing the enemies can hurt you with when you block is their heavy attack, but they do it so rarely the game just gives you the health back again anyway - you regenerate when you block successfully for so many seconds.
Hmm, tried that mate and was brown bread in under a minute. We must have different versions. (mine's the one with bad mutha ****er on it )

    Was pretty much beaten ****less.

Huh. Maybe Robert's men are all actual Templars - identical to the hidden enemies, that is, not just guys in red surcoats. Heavy attacks do break your block with the right trigger and the Templars tend to chain two or three of those together sometimes whereas the regular enemies hardly ever use them. Eh, don't remember. It's too long since I played it and I freely admit I switched over on the lengthy running fight before that battle, not the battle itself. I'm not lying, though. The fighting is, on the whole, spectacularly easy. One-hit kills, too much button-mashing, enemies lining up in single file... And throws in particular - why do the enemies throw you? I never could work that out. It does nothing.

A hilarious option but one which worked for me was to just leg it round the edges of the area with them in tow when I needed to gain some energy back. Benny Hill style basically but it worked, then stop and take a few more out. Rinse and repeat. Simple...

What the hell is with this game, just started it, like an hour ago and I'm so bored! Cutscene's keep coming up that bore the hell outta me and stupid
          stuff too!

I just wanna climb about n stab people! How long does this take to kick in!

It is a very slow start, unfortunately. You could argue that it introduces important story stuff but that's not much of an excuse. Stick with it, though. It gets much better once you get a bit of freedom, and you must be nearly there by now.

Played a bit more there, not so bad. But it's all very automated isn't it. Like to climb you just hold up until you've reached the top and it's done. And for my first assassination I just walked up behind the guy and pressed X and it was done. Thought there was gonna be more to it than that, more sneaky skills or something. Dunno...

Overall it's still impressive, the high production values are clearly evident but just feels a little bit hollow still.

And I just got chucked into

              the future

again there so turned it off as I couldn't be bothered with all that mumbo jumbo again!

completed one assassination, marvelled at the scenery from atop of some towers and... lost interest completely. i've yet to fully understand why

See, I agree totally, I put it down after doing the first two assainations but yet...

...picked it upa cpl of weeks later and just got sucked in.

I appreciate the mechanics can be somewhat repetitive but I really njoyed it.

Ended uo doing all the side quests and height things, I'm not gonna bother with the flags thx! But just really njoyed myself, a great 'world' to soak up methinks.

I look fwd to the 2nd in the trilogy, will give 'em time to hone it, bit like Splinter Cell.

I liked the story, myself. Not the best attempt at moralising in a videogame I've ever seen, but it was pretty interesting, a lot better written than I was expecting and held my interest. As I said before, I'd happily buy a sequel even if they didn't fix a thing. Well, maybe not happily, but eh. It's Ubisoft, I'm not crossing my fingers.

The "twist" - is there anyone who doesn't know by now? - never bothered me either. Partly because I knew it in advance, partly because I thought it was an okay GUI, if nothing else. I never bothered with chasing down all the extra little bits of information, though, and the ending was ludicrously badly presented.

late to the party i know but seeing as i slapped down a preorder for the second game on pc i thought id better get around to playing the first through.

not read any of the above comments to avoid spoilers (i know theres a twist but don't tell me what it is ) but so far the game is a bit of a mixed bag. i very nearly stopped playing it before the first assassination as i found a bug where when you get close to the target it does that sort of cutscene bit where all you can do is walk. trouble is it triggered this when i was on the roof so i couldn't jump down to where the guy was. really pretty poor when you consider that the rooftops are the most direct approach and plenty of people would head that way.

another gripe is that i don't really feel like an assassin, just some guy killing people. there doesn't seem to be any way of actually sneakily taking people out and when you get caught, its easier to kill the guards than to run and hide.

still i've made it through the third assassination, will possibly keep going. i really like the setting and so far the story, and the game is mostly fun.

oh and by the way the pc port is horrendous. would have been nice if ubisoft actually tried.

Heh, no, you know the 'twist' if you've started playing, trust me. Spoilered just in case, though.

Ubi didn't outright reveal the whole thing is a VR simulation until the game was released, and many people who had their hearts set on a completely historical storyline were outraged at the SF elements when they realised. It's not much of a twist, but some people managed to avoid finding out until they'd bought the thing.

The first game is definitely not set up anywhere near as creatively as the second; there are ways of taking out many of the targets using stealth, but it's far harder, in some cases it's not possible and as you say, the combat is so shockingly easy the game is weighted way too far towards encouraging you to just slaughter everyone in sight.

ah haha, I'm a bit disappointed now, was expecting something epic towards the end of the game.

think i will keep going too, its a bit of fun, i just wish there was more of a sense of danger when you get caught, encouraging you to run and hide.

@Rooks: I'm still stunned that people might have been a bit peeved regarding that aspect.....

It is a bit of a shame Ubisoft didn't include a few heavy stealth-based sections. It's obvious now that was never their plan with this series, but having to hide in the crowd and be really careful about being seen as you make your way through the cities could have made for some seriously tense moments. Instead, like you say, it never really matters if you get caught, and you can only create that kind of tension yourself by choice. Even then, if it goes wrong it makes no difference.
