I got a message from Steam today about a new technology being implimented in the engine, and they are releasing a free demo of Highway 17 with this new lighting included.

Perhaps this new engine upgrade is going to be used for...TF2?

I'm actually on Highway 17 (for the first time) right now, so there we go

Saw that message too and decided to replay Highway 17 for the laugh... great level!

The new level is going to be released for folks with high-end hardware to test those new features.

Yeah. Looking forward to see exactly what it does. The one think lacking in the Source engine is quality lighting, so this will hopefully fix this.

I think HDR lighting is only implemented in NVIDIA Geforce 6 line of GPUs, so that's probably the requirement for that level.

Yeah. I also remember Pixel Shader 3.0 enhancements for Far Cry were restricted to Nvidia GPUs.

Yeah the best the current ATIs will do is PS2.0

I actually tried the Shader Model 3 path on Farcry and it doesn't actually have that much of an impact on frame rate at all! I'm hoping the same can be said from HDR lighting on the Source engine.

No need to worry. It'll be a couple of years before most PC titles start to make use of next-gen GPU features.

The modifications to the likes of Far Cry and Half-Life 2 aren't related to the finished product, but tinkering afterwards that's often usually bolted on.

Well, I've just returned to City 17 after a few fantastic hours in Nova Prospect. I even enjoyed the gun-turrent section that people seem to hate, managed them all on my first go too! easy peasy

The first level back in City 17 is a bit of a let down though, I was expecting something outragously good, but this is just...as expected, nothing out of the ordinary city-under-attack gaming. It'll probably pick up again, it usually does.

Not finding the game all that tough and only really ran into difficulties when controlling the boat, but that hasn't stopped me enjoying the game. Perhaps not quite as good as expected, and there is a lot of room for improvement - but some of the levels are among the very finest I've ever played. The atmosphere in Nova Prospect is just wonderful throughout, loved it to bits.

Oh, and Dog: fantastic animation! Best I've ever seen.

                                Who's better...

                                Dog or HK-47?

                                I think Dog.
