It'd be great if you could send Barney off in the game to get you a cup of coffee.

New post from Gabe N at HL2Fallout :-

      Quick update:

      - ATI/CZ users will get turned on later tonight for the CS: Source test

      - An update will be out today as well. This is largish (~60 MB).

      - The size of the update is due to the Video Stress Test it includes. You'll be able to do some initial performance analysis using this test and report the data back to a central server. The results of the VST will be posted on Steampowered.com.

      - HL/2 pre-load will begin tomorrow. It was ready yesterday, but we decided to use the bandwidth to get out the VST first since I get pelted with zillions of questions from people asking how their PC will run Half-Life 2.

Looks like the VST is Valve speak for their long promised benchmark tool.

Notice he's saying preload HL2. The fan boy in me screams this is more than possibly just textures / sounds / models etc, as he isn't being specific ( as in other comments ) about what bits are preloading.

I don't think it'll be the whole game in one go, they'll probably do it in two or three attempts to avoid bandwidth meltdown.

It's so close now. I can just feel it.....

I'm hoping we see some confirmations and movement from Valve regarding Half-Life 2 now this beta testing for Counter Strike: Source is underway. I wish they'd get that benchmark out though.

Incidentally, my graphics card came with Counter Strike: Condition Zero bundled.

I haven't even tried it yet though. Do you have any idea how the beta testing works with it over Steam?

Well I'm currently downloading Counter Strike: Source beta from steam now, but I couldn't see this supposed benchmarking tool for Half-Life 2 anywhere to download. Does anyone know if it's included with the Source beta itself?

Edit: Found out the Valve Stress Test is included with the download. I'll let you know how the test benchmarks my system so those of you without CS: Source can get an indication of how Half-Life 2 will square up on your gear.

A few screenshots from the VST for Half-Life 2. Remember that technology demo Valve showed at E3 2003? I'm getting Deja Vu.

I've been looking at some of the benchmarking reports, and it looks as though Valve were right. The source engine (specifically for Half-Life 2) seems to be pulling in high fps scores on even current generation cards such as the 9700 and 9800.

Can the stress test thingy run by itself or do you need the whole CS Source download? Haven't got CS:CZ and not bothered about CS Source really but it would be nice to know how my PC fares (I have an nVidia card so I'm slightly concerned hehe)

I think it's actually included in the Source beta download, because it isn't available anywhere in the Steam menus in 'browse games' or 'play games'. The news section on Steam powered also mentioned the download contained the VST for Half-Life 2. Anyway, look at this thread for a few benchmarks.

It looks very positive indeed so far.

Only 10 minutes to go until the CS: Source Beta is downloaded. Would it be wrong of me to say I'm looking forward just as much to finally seeing Half-Life 2 (even if it is a technology benchmark demo) run on my system as I am to playing the Source version of Counterstrike?

Can the VST be *cough* distributed *cough* outside of Steam and separate to CS Source though I wonder?

Cos there's no way on earth I'm letting Steam get anywhere near my PC!

Very promising from that link though - someone with an nVidia FX5900 128MB video card getting 70+ fps!

Damn ! Can't check that link until I get home ! ( acursed work and their acursed high falooting firewall )

Can't wait to see how the 9800 pro holds up. That might stop me moaning

I was wondering about the seperate VST as well. I don't use Steam ( simply cos I've never been bothered to look into it )

How good an indicator is this going to for the actual game though? The FX5900 may be getting 70fps but everything else might be getting 700fps. Theres no way you are going to get 70fps in the actual game so what relevance does this "benchmark" have?

Testing it now. Under various settings. I lost my post before that I was typing up though, so bear with me. Believe me when I say the game looks stunning. Remember how good Far Cry's water looked? Imagine it a thousand times better.

The actual demo is short and slightly smaller than Doom III's timedemo1. It plays out like the technology demo from E3 2003 (with the water, stained glass, man on fire).

Well Steam's got off to a good start.

I tried running CS: Source Beta in Window Mode and the next time I launched the game it crashed before start-up with an AA error. So you'll have to bear with me in obtaining more benchmarks while I reinstall it. This is what I recorded before the crash.

Is it like dooms timedemo, test the graphics card only or does the sound, AI etc. run during it?

No enemies. Just a bunch of various graphical effects with no sound. Or at least I didn't get any sound.

Have you got an screen shots of Steam? Also it sounds like the type of program which is going to sit in my start bar tray and annoy the hell out of me.
