From discussions with friednds and my own opnions I have drawn the conclusion that Gordon is a Government resource that they 'activate' when the **** hits the fan!! Gordon being called a 'pawn' by Breen show this. I didnt play right throught the first one so may be missing a vital piece of the puzzle. Would love if this could all be explained, or my view agreed with
    G-Man is never explicitly defined.

He could be working for the Government, he could be an alien just like the Combine, he could be another faction of the Combine, or be a remnant from the previous human 'administration' working alongside the rebels of City 17. Heck, he may even be representative of Valve as a developer, or as the game speaking directly to the player.

There are also equally many ways you can interpret the ending, such is it's open nature. One thing that's highlighted is Breen knows Freeman can be 'hired', so the G-Man could just as equally be viewed an agent who pimps your services out for hire to anyone who can bid high enough. Though we're never told at what cost...

    In the first game,

G-Man appears just out of reach at key points throughout the adventure, and there's the sense he's helped orchestrate the events at Black Mesa, or knows who did (the failed test experiment which allowed Xen access to Earth through an open teleport). At the conclusion, after you've fought your way through Xen and killed Nihilanth, the alien advisor enslaving the Vortiguants, G-Man steps in and plays about with time, offering you a job. Either you can work for him or fight a useless struggle. Of course, it's fairly obvious which events Half-Life 2 is based on.

Cheers Concept. I fear you have ceated more questions than answers for me, hehe, but that really helps bring into focus the story of HL2 and the original.

The story toward the end suggests to me Freeman is some kind of Mercenary, used in times of great need by the G Man OR the highest bidder!! In more detail this parrallels the game players role, which I think is a gorgeous twist!! We, the player are called upon just as Freeman is into Half life 2. With no knowledge of our activity in between 1 and 2 the events of the game and Freemans campaign are identical. Used for a purpose and once that purpose has been met IE. Citadel destroyed / Game complete, we are discarded absolute genious!! Really cant wait for more from this franchise and hope expansion packs aint too far away!!

It's like Quantum Leap mixed with the Twilight Zone.

To put right what once went wrong.
Which makes g-man... Dean Stockwell. Hmm.

Mmm. I can't stop playing through the opening to this game. Is there any other title that kicks off so strongly for the first hour or so?

It's good... great, but I just played through and it never had that 'oomph' that its predecessor did for me. Although perhaps part of that is due to me seeing a few Bink vids before the game came out not knowing how spoilerific they were, or expecting a parallel to the brilliance of the Tram Ride in HL.
I mean, yeah, the scripted sequences are kick-arse, but they're a mix of HL1's with say Halo's RTS-style shenanigans (huge dropships hovering above you) and the new physics.
I mean, I love how watching the Vortigaunt sweeping up actually means his broom makes contact with the Chinese Takeaway cartons, but c'mon, where're the massive spearhead assaults of MOH or COD?

Finished at about half one today and I have to say those last few levels were superb. In fact I can't really fault any level which is probably why this is my first completed game since this time last year (PoP:SoT).

The game isn't without fault and my overall feeling is that it could have been much better had it not been a Half Life game, by which I mean that sometimes it felt there were better ways to do things that would have changed the game away from the HL 'feel'. Course all that does is make me want Valve to make a non-HL game next!

In fact the only time I gave up after getting pissed off with the game was with the stupid troops in 'follow freeman'. How many times did they get me killed because they block your run for cover? Too many times...

Even with its problems, I still can't give this game less than a ten. Every weapon is satisfying to use, the vehicles are fun, sound is effective and the graphics are sublime. Even the small sections of platforming are not too bad.

Game of the 2004? Without a doubt in my mind.

I thought the last sequence in the Follow Freeman level was pretty intense. Where you come out of an underground chamber to the ruined remains of a house with tons of Combine forces, and then you make your why to the top of a nearby house and you have to destroy some combine forces and 3 striders. The other battles with striders also generally kicked some major ass.

Agreed, that was a superb sequence. I think it was a little way before that that I gave up trying to keep my followers alive ("stand in the corner and don't move, fs").

Heh yeah thankfully in that sequence you kept getting replacement followers whenever the ones you had died.

Half-life 2 named game of the year in the D.I.C.E. summit. They won 8 awards in total. Halo 2 got 4 awards, none of which were in categories in which Half-life 2 was nominated. HL2 lost in only one category - Outstanding Achievement in Game Design, which went to - yeah you guessed it - Katamari Damacy.

Halo 2 guns down four awards; San Andreas, Katamari, Fable, among a pack picking up two awards each; World of Warcraft named best MMO game.

I thought the followers were quite useful at the points with the walkers. I used them as Cannon fodder and sent them out as a distraction while I raced for the besrt cover

The Walker battle outside the Museum building were fantastic!! And the final sequence through the citadel was brilliant!! Using that Uber Grav gun was superb!! So many great set piece battles, you cant mention them all!! Overall just a great gaming experience!!

So what's up with all those single player mods that let you play from perspectives of other folks, like the Combine, or even in one case antlions? Any of them any good?

                                Eh ? Not seen those.

The only mod I've seen which is worth having a play about with is Garysmod which you can use to create such masterpieces such as

                                and delights such as

None of those are mine by the way. Check out the Garrys mod forum for loads more examples from lots of creative nutters
