    aaaaaaand I'm back to sucking.

Guessing my placement matches put me way above my actual skill or my suck levels are too great for battlenet. It's not fun losing comprehensively 4-5 times in a row. Think I'm gonna shelve online.

    *edit*

Any good players able to offer me advice on the best ways of countering the following as protoss:

Terran turtling (siege tanks behind supply depots with very strong AA and air).

Nuke spam (keep getting ghosts nuking outer base defences then taking advantage of the hole to nuke the base itself).

I've not played SCII online yet, but I can't wait to get stuck in once I've completed the campaign.

@abigsmurf, the issues you're having sound very similar to scenarios from the original StarCraft, Terran turtling plays out like a waiting game, expand your bases and wait them out until they run out of resources, you'll have far more and a much larger army to take them on.

For Ghosts nuking your perimeter you've got to rely on Observers scouting on the fringe of your bases, make use of the the patrol command and keep one eye on your minimap, if they're not sending forward a major force they'll unlikely have anything to detect your unit.

Oh, and check out the Immortal for use against the Siege Tank.

Forgot about patrolling. An observer with a void ray or a couple of ranged ground units should protect against lone ghosts hopefully. Not sure how well it'll work against well timed creeping nuke spam though.

Will definitely have to try using more immortals against turtlers. Maybe a pincer movement with immortals and the the new big things (whose name I forget) and some carriers and void rays pestering their gatherers.

Gah. I want to play again now to try out these tactics.

        *edit*

        Woo, lost 2, won 2.

All 4 games involved rushers. Did help me perfect my early build order though.

Well I've played 3 placement games. Won my 1 on 1 then did 2 2v2 and won 1, lost 1.

Starting to learn the intricacies of multiplayer but there's still a long way to go. I've never really dived into RTS online in the same way I have other genres, despite loving them.

Is it bad form to not immediately surrender when the chips are down? I ask because there's mechanics to reveal you if you don't have a base, but if you start building one you're ok. People start to get a bit irate. I can't really compare it to any other genre behavior although I guess if it's prolonging the inevitable then it's pretty annoying. I've seen replays of people who have won by rebuilding after looking essentially beaten.

Depends if you stand a realistic chance of coming back. Quite often, people will go all out when attacking (especially rushers) and have a pathetically guarded base. I've won games I thought were hopeless purely by sending two void rays over to their base.

However, if they've something like 10 carriers flying around and you've no buildings at all... You're just drawing out a lost cause. Try to judge what state their economy and base must be in.

Anyone else having trouble logging in to the Battlenet? Whilst I love the service it gives, it's frustrating that I can't play the campaign until the service issue is resolved.

                        Euch.

The custom game system is utterly horrible. Battlenet only keeps track of the 50 most popular maps. If you want to host games that aren't part of the top 50, you have to 'publish' the map yourself by opening it in the editor. Even then you can only host 5 maps.

Had an epic game against an old school friend yesterday. It was Terran vs Terran, but I think I always had the upper hand in this as I was pumping out my army faster. Granted, he was playing defensively but I still took out his main base. Was killing the final workers and marines and was wondering why his units weren't being revealed, turns out he sneakily had a base on a corner island.

OK, I was easily winning when it came to resources and had the pick of all the mineral fields, even had 4 or 5 mules at one point going for the gold minerals. So I started to build up my battlecruisers for a tank rush style end to the game and the unthinkable happens...

I didn't have the AC plugged into my laptop and windows decided to go into hibernate for me. At that time, I had already quickly plugged it in, but to no avail... disconnected and lost the game. If you're supposed to learn a lesson with every game, then I certainly know what I learnt there!

Abandoned my policy of Void ray rushes.

It's amazing how fast people have learnt to counter them. Instead I'm focusing on counter attacking.

Mix of Zealots and stalkers are incredibly versatile early game. Back them up with a few void rays and it'll defend well against most early-mid assaults, especially if you stay in range of photon cannons.

Got absolutely hammered by someone who massed carriers sent a mothership alongside them (first time I'd ever seen one).

Any effective counters for mass carriers? They seem to chew through anything and they're really effective against void rays.

                            *edit*

Seems the only effective carriers are motherships or more carriers.

Really surprised there isn't a direct counter.

Well Motherships are the be all and end all, if you're letting your opponent create one then it's taking too long, of course, each race has their own über unit, so you should use that, I'm not sure how interesting Mothership Vs Mothership would be though

Battle cruisers are fairly effective, course the motherships have that annoying black hole, though that doesn't actually do damage.
