I've just tried that Fan Remix demo and, yes, it absolutely utterly annihilates Sonic 4. Yeah, so it gets dark in places where the original was beautifully bright and light. While I personally wouldn't agree with that choice, it's a fairly small thing compared with every single thing it gets absolutely spot-on.

Sonic handles like Sonic. I'm in total control (as Saturn-Gamer said). He goes where I want him to go and where I expect him to go when I press the buttons. That is absolutely key and the most important area where Sonic 4 got it completely wrong. Everything else is just a bonus.

But what a bonus. The touches in that fan remix are gorgeous. How they integrated the stage intros, the transitions through the day. The look of Sonic himself and all the enemies. The sound.

Most of all, it feels like it was made with love.

I might not go as far as to say that Sonic 4 feels like it was crapped out but, well, maybe I will. At the very least, it certainly didn't feel like it was made with love. And if you're not going to make a game with love, why bother?

No homing attack either. I can't help to think that was added to save some of the borked gameplay. Since regular jumps are so iffy.

But Sonic 4 bashing aside, I did end up enjoying the game and collecting all the stones. I somehow can't wait for Episode 2, although I fear Dimps won't really redo the gameplay (for all I know Episode 2 might be finished already).

The GFX in the Fan remix literary destroys most XBLA games, including the likes of PD XBLA and what not . It just to me doesn't look like like a classic Sonic 16 bit title.
Mind you I always felt the very 1st 16 bit Sonic was the best looking out of all the 2D Sonic

I thought Greenhill Zone in Sonic 1 looked better than it did in Sonic 2, especially the background.

Thank GOD I was not the only one. I loved the parallax scrolling on the water, it looked incredible at the time . Too me it will always be the best looking 2D Sonic game

I have to admit after the high of the first zone the Casino zone is fustration and awful design personified.

I still think this is one of the better Sonic games in the last few years, but could have been so much better.

To be fair, the 360 and Ps3 are too weak to run this Fan Remix in the state its in right now.

I'm unleashing a quad core with a gigabyte card on it, and while it runs good enough, I can see it has trouble running SFR on maxed settings.

I don't agree at all. I am running a basic 2.2 dual core laptop with 4gb ram and a weak graphics card. I ran Sonic at 10 ish fps full detail and close to 20 with minimum.

PS3 and 360 would do this justice at a canter.

Is there a full version of SFR available?

I haven't played a decent Sonic game in my life and Sonic 4 hasn't changed that. Since the original Sonic on the Megadrive, the games have always symbolised the crystallisation of style over substance in my eyes and Sonic 4 only reinforces that belief. Looks gorgeous, plays hollow, feels empty.

Wait for Colours, everything I've seen so far of that suggests it will be the best Sonic game there has been in a very long time (perhaps even since the 16 bit ones). They've taken some inspiration from Nintendo for it, but the gameplay vids show it still very much has sonic's personality, and the levels have the right mix of lush green vegitation and stunning scenery, with the industrial metal behemoth structures clotting up the landscape.

Those 2 vids alone completely put me off paying £10 for Sonic 4 instead opting for £29.99 for this.

It still doesn't look very good. It is more about spectacular automated jumping scenes and lock ons than actual classic Sonic gameplay. There is too little interaction by the looks of it, a lot of preset actions.

                          Boring.

Did you watch the second video where the level is all 2D just about? The first video was by someone who had mastered the level and so may just be making it look easier than it is. We don't know enough about it to really say it's "automated" or anything, it might be an early level with a lot more hand holding. The basics look solid though.

Wow, Sonic really does get an unfair amount of stick off people I guess.

Sonic 4 looks jokes compared to colours, colour me impressed. Ahem.
