I've just tried that Fan Remix demo and, yes, it absolutely utterly annihilates Sonic 4. Yeah, so it gets dark in places where the original was beautifully bright and light. While I personally wouldn't agree with that choice, it's a fairly small thing compared with every single thing it gets absolutely spot-on.
Sonic handles like Sonic. I'm in total control (as Saturn-Gamer said). He goes where I want him to go and where I expect him to go when I press the buttons. That is absolutely key and the most important area where Sonic 4 got it completely wrong. Everything else is just a bonus.
But what a bonus. The touches in that fan remix are gorgeous. How they integrated the stage intros, the transitions through the day. The look of Sonic himself and all the enemies. The sound.
Most of all, it feels like it was made with love.
I might not go as far as to say that Sonic 4 feels like it was crapped out but, well, maybe I will. At the very least, it certainly didn't feel like it was made with love. And if you're not going to make a game with love, why bother?
