Does the game improve significantly after the first hour or two of play? After reading the Edge review and the plethora of voices saying it's a 'thinking man's FPS' I was quite excited about this but, playing it, was immediately put off by the generic, bland aesthetics and typically dystopian vision of the future. Felt bleak, unimaginative, characterless and devoid of fun, I turned it off after 90 minutes and fear wasting any more time finding out if it gets much better. Does it?

After seeing how wound up I got with the first 2, just watched this video after I saw this guy. WHAM. Finished.

It's definately intensional as you get a different cinematic if you beat him that way.

I think it's a piece of trolling by the developers given that if you try that any time other than that brief window, you die (and all the other bosses do major damage if you try it)

Don't get me wrong, I thought the graphics technically good and quite functional: they're clear and sharp and detailed and colourful, but they don't exactly set themselves apart, they don't have a style that's their own, nor did they evoke a desire (in me) to poke around in every corner and explore and I got the sense the game requires a fair amount of poking around and exploring. At the risk of sounding shallow, I have a hard time exploring game worlds that look like so many others, that aren't aesthetically pleasing or in some way interesting.

But I'm pleased to hear it gets better. Guess it's a matter of perservering. But that's difficult to do when other games on my shelf provide immediate fun and satisfaction.

Hehe. No need to wow. We all perceive things differently and appreciate different things differently. But maybe you're right, maybe perservering in my case is futile.

You must hate pretty much evreything released in the last 5 years then. Apart from El Shaddai.

It does keep me from playing a lot of games I'd probably otherwise enjoy but, no, thankfully there remain a handful of companies developing distinctive looking games. You work for one of them.

When I first got to China in the game I was amazed by the atmosphere and the sense of a possible future. I guess some people don't like that.
