well i have put tons of hours into the game and this gets my game of the year

completed the main quest and now doing loads of side quests ...this game unlike oblivion or even morrowind made me feel compelled to see the full game through. Was a bit disapointed that the final part of the final quest was not a bit more epic but still was good fun

at level 36 and not really finding it a challenge now i hope the DLC adds some high level enemies and quests...oh does anyone know if there is a level cap for this game ?

There's a soft cap at level 50. It doesn't stop you gaining levels after that, but it slows down the progress quite a bit.

I'm level 34 and still find it pretty tough going at times, I think it's down to playing a sneaky light armour specialist though. If I end up in a toe to toe melee battle I'm going to lose it if I'm not spot on with my shouts.

And those instant kill melee attacks are REALLY winding me up now. Twice now a dragon has just chomped me down for a one hit kill. Grr...

Been playing it too much the past few days.
On the train to work I was looking out the window and saw the shadow of the train against the side of the track. First thought was that it looked smooth, and not blocky.

There is a level cap that doesn't cap how many times you can level up? Eh?

Are we sure about this? I had read that you can only reach an overall level of 50 (meaning no more skill points afterwards) but your individual stats can still all level up to 100. Is that not right?

This is what the wiki says:

Past level 50, leveling up happens much more slowly. The theoretical level cap (maximum level) is level 81, reached by increasing all skills to 100.(tested with player.advskill console cheat)
One implication of the leveling system is that although it is possible to create a character with 100 in all skills, it is not possible for one character to unlock all skill perks, unless a console command is used (player.addperk). In such a case, one may unlock every perk available, even at level 1. This, however, will disable obtainment of achievements, and is considered cheating. There are more than 250 total skill perks (including multi-point perks), but only around 80 of them can be unlocked by any given character.

              Today I managed to

accidentally propose marriage to a man called Perth.

Got my sneak ability up to 100 yesterday, but what an annoyance - when you go into sneak mode now you get a black cloud animation thing surrounding you that obscures your vision for bow attacks, I thought I'd been diseased or poisoned at first. Really irritating.

83 hours in now, level 41, 241 locations discovered, nearly 800 people killed and 73 dungeons cleared. I'm working through the last of the Thieve Guild missions now before the final push of the main story arc. Then it'll be time to mop-up the Imperial & Companions quest lines and the Deadric side missions.

Still a lot of stuff to do.

Heh. Did a little chuckle at that.

Man, it's all kicking off in Markarth - My guy woke up there after accepting some randomers drinking contest. Murders in the street! Daedra possessed houses! Sexy Temples! It's got it all, and it looks pretty cool too.

I also discovered that telekinesis magic is dead nifty for the long range thief.

Love that this game can throw you a massive curve ball by suddenly being at the opposite side of the map, and in just a few seconds you've gone from a routine crafting and selling spree, into a spiraling sequence of fresh quests and intrigue. It's ace.

Awesome times last night. And some amusing ones. I attacked a bandit thief and he ran at me shouting "I'll get you!" or some-such but then just ran away from me and seemed to just carry on running in a straight line away from the encampment, still shouting about how he was gonna teach me a lesson!

I have never played a game like this properly before, but this seems to be excellent.

In a nutshell, could people sum up the good and bad of this? What is the combat like? Are there lots of locations? Much variety? Are the side quests mere filler content?

Be good to know. Need a poll too.

I think most of that's already been summed up in the thread tbh.

Alternatively, in a teeny nut shell:

Combat: Not perfect but better than Oblivion.

                        Locations: Loads and loads.

Variety: Hell yes- more than Oblivion. Especially in dungeons/caves etc.

Side quests: Not mere filler on the whole.

I couldn't be arsed to read through 15 pages! Plus there are spoilers too.

                          Thanks.

You may as well watch a video review to be honest since that will give you a better idea.

The combat is basically first person (although there is a token third person view). No shooting though of course, pretty much all swords/axes/etc., or magic. One new feature in Skyrim is the ability to dual-wield weapons in each hand, or a weapon in one hand and a magic spell in the other, or a shield in one hand... basically any combination. Very flexible.

The world is bigger than anything you may have experienced in any other RPG. And because the point of the game is basically the exploration of the world, there's no filler.

As for the side quests, well essentially the main quest itself is more of a token thing. The point has always been the *other* content - the side quests, the different guilds you can join etc (te thieves guild, the Dark Brotherhood, joining the imperial forces, joining the anti-imperial Stormcloaks, or doing all of them if you want). Doing your own thing basically, walking around and finding new quests, exploring the world. It's open world, but there's no filler here - the world has been lovingly crafted and filled with genuine content. There is a main 'plot' of course, but you'd be missing the point if you only played the main storyline quests. It should be taken as a 'world', not merely a 'game' with the usual linear progression.

Is it much better than Oblivion? Should I try that first. (sorry to derail a tad)
