    Monster Hunter 3G

Full game has arrived with my sexy new white and red MH decalled J-3DS and I've managed to have a very quick go of it first thing this morning. I'm going to outright admit that I'm interested to see what others will think of this who have sunk a lot of time into the previous three versions of the game as my history with MH is very light and checkered. The little I played of MH: Freedom Unite and MH3Tri didn't do anything for me so this will form my first real dedicated play of an MH game.

My knowledge of Japanese is non-existant so most of the ride was taken up by setting up the settings and my character. I sped through the dialogue sections at the start and quickly ran out onto the main play field. First up, this is another triumphant victory for Capcoms MT Framework Mobile, the game looking pin sharp and stunning with excellent draw distance and a solid sense of depth to the 3D. The framerate seems rock solid too with player movement and combat feeling responsive and speedy enough. I only had time to take down a couple of passive grey plant eater type dinosaurs before returning to base to save. My bus rides are typically an hour so it'll be interesting to see how commuter friendly this proves to be despite the series portable past.

The only area of concern is the camera which is mapped to the dpad. It works well enough but it means moving and seeing can prove difficult which could affect big battles, especially when it often means doing one instead of the other. It'll be interesting to see if the slide pad will iron this small niggle out.

No doubt my personal biggest hurdle is going to be the language barrier as have no idea what's with all the options on the lower screen though for that to be the case it shows that first impressions of 3G are much better for me than my previous attempts at the series have been. Time for me to research how best to conquer this portable beast.

I still tempted. But the outlay of roughly ?300-?320 (not inclusive of import duty) for the LE console and game is a bit too much for me. Though last year I spent that much on the LE MH Portable 3rd PSP unit + game...

The fact that It's got no online pretty much bums me out of a purchase, no matter how much I love the series. Though temptation is a funny thing...

As for camera controls. Whether you want to go old school and 'claw' or controlling the camera with the right analog stick is up to you. Personally I 'claw' so I can keep my thumbs on the attack buttons and use my left index finger to control the camera. With the D-Pad being touch screen (and defaulted to the right side of the screen) though some people have already changed the position of it to the top left corner and giving back the ability to utilise the claw, thankfully for me.

Personally I still love MH Portable 3rd HD, even though I've pretty much done and dusted it. It's just the online social aspect which keeps me coming back for more.

    How is the 3D aspect?
I've read varying things of it being serviceable to being blurry and not much cop.

The 3D effect seems pretty clear and decent enough though it doesn't really add much as the game wasn't made with it mind so everythings usually at a distance. It'll be interesting to see if it affects MH4

You can't claw with the 3DS as the slide pad and d-pad are the opposite way around, unless you want the claw finger to move your character.

Contrary to what people (that american dude the other day when we were on 3rdHD) are saying, the bowguns are back to light/heavy and are one piece weapons again. No really thinking that is much of an improvement, but if you can put a shield on all the heavy bowguns i will be a happy man.

Haven't played with the slide pad yet and might only use it for underwater levels as that is really the only time you need it per se. I tend to just take my thumb off the slide pad and move the camera. With large monster fights I would probably just go with the lock-on which seems to work well, centring the camera toward the selected beasty rather than behind the player.

As for the ZR/ZL buttons on the slide pad, I think they're just used for diving directly down or swimming directly up respectively, like on the CCPro on Tri.

No online mode really makes me wonder how possible it'll be to beat Jhen and its subspecies.

Oh and the 3D effect when you have a long sword on your back and you bend down to pick up something is like it's trying to poke you in the eye

This guy has a workaround for those claw lovers. What I meant before was the touch screen D-Pad, not the physical one

Nooooo... That's what I loved about Tri.
That's one more hit below the belt for me not purchasing.

          Yup.
I was thinking about this the other day. It was a drag on Portable 3rd doing all the double quests to unlock Alatreon. I think I did about nine (out of god knows how many) before I couldn't be bothered, and it wasn't until I went online I mopped them all up with online warriors.

To think in Tri G you've got the subspecies, multi quests and G-rank monsters to beat... all on yer tod. No thanks. I mean sure it's doable, hell I did most of Portable 3rd offline, but it's going to be a proper ball-ache by yourself. Unless you have wealthy friends who've heard of Mohan.
Plus part of the charm is going online. Ad-hoc only doesn't cut it these days Capcom. Sorry, no deal.

Ad hoc would be great, but not even that, you all know how much im a monster hunter collector ( sucker ), delete as necessary. The whole point of MH is the social side and for Capcom to put this out without it is really taking the P1$$, kinda getting like activision ( COD) i think, taking pots of money and really giving nothing back in return, no dedicated servers except the Wii, its 2011 and as gamers we should be demanding this, would probably import IF it had the online, but i think i'll wait for hopefully a UK release, though im really tempted, oh MH i hate you too, and kryss and CTN.

If you loved Naruga. You'll love his new 'trick'

The HR4 urgent (at first) on Portable 3rd was bad with trollfango making guest appearances...

                    He goes invisible.
In other news, it seems Tigrex (and subspecies) are currently not in Tri G so far...

Well after numerous hours with the slide pad, I think it is indispensable for swimming sections, but not so much for the rest. The target camera works really well but is a touch slow.

Switched to the dual blades for a bit

Totally agree with this. The target camera is a great addition. I find myself relying on it a lot more than the right stick when fighting the monsters.

I've put over 20 hours into the game now and I have to say it's a close call as to whether this or 2ndG/Unite is the best game in the series. I'm just gutted that there's no online as it's the only thing stopping it from being the perfect Monster Hunter.

yup MHP 3rd HD is my favourite, probably cause of the online social side, and putting in 200 hours
