    Under Defeat HD 360

Well, let's start by getting the bad out of the way. This game IS NOT HD. The graphics look no better than the Dreamcast game running through VGA, IMO. Now that's out of the way, let's get on to the good stuff.

First up is that this game still kicks arse. Put it on last night and played it solid for almost 3 hours!! That's a long time for a game of this type. The arcade mode is pretty much as it was on the Dreamcast so not much change there. The main game change is the addition of the true 16.9 screen mode (sorry, in work at the moment and don't have the game to check what it's called). G.Rev have taken half of the screen and magically made it in to wide screen. Ray Force did this too but that was a mess with the top of the image missing. G.Rev have actually tweaked this mode in order to make it play very well. there's no missing enemies half off the screen and no enemies just suddenly appearing out of nowhere. They've really done a good job with the translation. Not only have they done wonders with the screen but also tweaked the game play. You helicopter can now rotate a much wider field, almost letting you fire horizontally across the screen.

If you still own the DC version then this remake may not be worth buying unless you are a real hardcore Under Defeat fan. The extra art galleries don't really make it a must purchase.

    Still a fantastic game though!

Sounds great :-). Thanks for the impressions. What audio options does it have, any remixes etc? Does it have score attack for upload? :-)

Does this have a one credit mode, you take one hit and die?

I love playing shmups like this, my first real go at a shmup was Mushihime on the 360 and the score attack mode in that was great. Lots of others don't have this and I have to manually restart when I take a hit.

I only play one credit on shmups, love the fast restart from scratch but never use it on the ones that say restart u at level 2. I never understand why peeps credit feed to see the end, what's the point, go as far as u can and survive or go for that 1 credit score. To me they should always have a forced score attack mode for any shmup and does my noggin in when reviewers say its over in 20-30mins as they credit feed, no skill at all....hehe rant over :- P

Yep! I like to play one hit until I just can't get any further. I generally manage 2 levels without taking a hit and not bombing before I start to relax.

The game does indeed have sound options. You can choose either the original soundtrack or new remixed track for either mode in the game. There is no one credit mode but I'm sure you can change them in the settings, or was that lives only? And to answer the final question, yep, it does have online score boards but only if you play on the default settings

I still can't get over how kick arse this game still is. It's 7 years old but still seems so fresh.

it's the sound that needs a HD upgrade, not the visuals! most of all the voice-overs are so poorly sampled on the DC that even people very much capable of the german language can barely understand what the radio voice says. so, any improvements here?

Nooe, it's the same but that's how it should be. Nothing to do with poor samples. That was how the arcade was also. It's the style G.Rev were going for. I play all my games from 16bit Mega Drive to modern day with the sound going through a high quality cinema 5.1 sound system and I can say that the audio on Under Defeat is just fine
