I feel a bit stupid to ask this but...isn't there a way to post messages without entering a channel/game?

Well, I have to say, I am enjoying this so far. I pretty impressed with the social side of it, It does seem to have a happy, friendly feel to it on a whole.
I played a fair bit on Nintendo Land, which is pretty neat. I am Loving the Zelda game on there. Definitely a nice bundled game.
There is no doubting the hardware is underwhelming, although the gamepad is better then I thought it would be. I guess I would have to buy one eventually anyway being an avid gamer as there is no way I would miss out on the Nintendo Exclusives when they arrive, ie Zelda.
I never had any problem at all getting mine online via WIfi, although I wish the machine had an LAN port on it as I just prefer hardwiring bigger items. The download update is a bit of a pain, but I filled the time reading this forum while it updated so all was good..its pretty slow.

They simply wont be as powerful as some people think, i imagine there are also going to be some heavy changes in regards to how games are made and distributed, for example focusing primarily on a 'service' - rather than traditonal gameplay experiences, much like the ipad etc: Triple AAA - huge titles cost too much to make, and getting your money back is a very risky thing nowadays. Microsoft, and perhaps Sony, simply wont be your traditional console. Better or for worse.
Nintendo hasnt chosen that route - they are doing things their way... and it just may pay off. Or it will burn them - it will be an interesting next 5 years, certainly.
As far as next gen power is concerned I think M$ will go all out and create an absolute beast myself, but they do need to put the 'fun' back into gaming and get their 'dashboard' sorted out. However the PS4 will probably be as you described above, not much of an upgrade, simply because I don't think Sony can afford it anymore.

Of course, the 360 & PS3 can still impress, but people will realise that extra power and memory will allow for even more impressive games.
The Wii U will have lots of great games( especially from Nintendo ) simply because the hardware is good enough to do lots of wonderful things. I have full faith that Nintendo will really go to town and impress everyone. The only problem is that many of the big third-party devs may already be moving their focus towards next generation( PS4, Xbox720 ) development. I'm sure there will be plenty reasons to own a Wii U and enjoy it a lot, though.

The gamepad feels like it's attached to my hip, it's unbelievable how convenient it is. Checking the net or managing updates is a doddle and being able to play on the gamepad screen remotely is a god send for those quick goes here and there when the missus is on the phone etc. As long as it's not just used for maps etc I can see multiformat releases seeing me pick up the WiiU version as first choice from now on where PS3 and 360 is concerned. The controllers are both spot on also, with the wifi nightmare out the way I'm properly falling in love with the system.

My impressions of just the hardware:
I was nervous about it, just like i suppose any other early adopter, but i got home set it up and turned it on.
I had no wifi issues at all connected first time and straight away no faffing, which if you read the net is not the norm.
Then the update, which again was slow (about 45 mins) in which time i made a sandwich, unsealed the games read the net\twitter etc.
The gamepad is so good, as others have said lovely weight and placement of stuff it just feels right and has totally changed the way i use the thing. playing mario without the tv is a joy as are many of the other games.
I'm pleased with it so far and the niggles it has may be ironed out with patches etc, special mention goes to the miiverse which i thought would be a gimmick but is full of friendly non trolling people so far asked for a bit of help on mario and within ten mins had my answer directly into the games miiverse. clever stuff indeed.
This thing has potential and thats all i can ask for at the moment, whether nintendo pull through or not is the bigger question but i'm having fun.

I think it's a shame that the sticks on the gamepad are not great. I really feel like this is a lovley console, and it's what I'd want to buy multi format games for in future if it wasn't for the sticks on the gamepad.
I can't believe some people are calling the console a disappointment though. In most respects I love it.
