Did a small write up of my initial opinions and experiences of the game. Tried to explain a few mechanics too.

Am sad to say that since buying it day one I've only played it for about an hour. Have just been crazy busy so tonight am hoping to sit down with it and but a big chunk of time it to it.

I probably didn't mention that I booked a week off of work to play it..

I wouldn't feel bad for taking your time hush, I think doing that will allow you to enjoy the game more. I've simply developed a regime for these games that I tend to stick to.

The reintroduction of medals in this game reminded me of how fun the contests were in Ruby and Sapphire. Thinking of revisiting those soon..

I feel X and Y are the first big steps made in the series since Ruby and Sapphire. Both generation IV and V felt like they weren't really adding much of value other than a slightly nicer looking environment.

40 hours in and still not fatigued with it which is remarkable for me.
I just got my 3rd badge and have acquired about 160 pokemon.

Had some epic stuff through wonder trade too. Got a chespin, fenekin and bulbasaur as well as a few cool ??? Dex number pokemon.

Axing game. If anyone wants to do any link evolution trades ala gengar etc let me know

Well, I finished the storyline and beat the Elite 4. Very easy throughout, mainly due to Torchic/Combusken/Blaziken though. His insane levelling speed and power made the entire thing hardly a challenge. Would recommend not using him in your main party if you want things to be slightly better difficulty wise.

I tried my hand at online ranked battles and ended up getting ripped apart something chronic like 9 played, 8 losses. Decided to put some time into researching the competitive metagame a little bit and realised how stupid and ineffective my EV training and item usage was.

Change that up, spent most of last night getting 3 reset bags, and spent the night re-training my main 3 ranked - Aegislash, Snorlax and Blaziken.

I maxed Aegislash's attack and HP, Snorlax's attack and HP, and Blaziken's attack and speed. I'll also be looking at fully training Gengar's Sp. Atk as I don't currently have anyone focused on special attacks.

Following this, I won 3 ranked matches in a row. A couple of these I still had 2/3 pokemon standing, and one of these matches was on a ranking quite a bit higher than mine.

Granted, one of them was quite lucky as I put a Quick Claw on Snorlax, and it proc'd on him using a Giga Impact which one-shot the enemy team's Mega Blaziken before he could do a single thing (Muahahaha!), so I still think there's a ton I've got to learn about the meta such as hazard builds, etc.

Enjoying it a lot more now I've got a proper nature'd and trained team and I understand the metagame.

Good stuff! Yeah, Quick Claw seems pretty effective this generation. Multiple times I've just been like "WTF!" at my 3DS. haha

Still need to swap out my Delphox but I do have an ace in regards to my Hidden Power being Water now, instead of using Grass Knot. So I might see how that works out online for anyone trying to OHKO me with Rock or Ground moves.

Beat the elite 4 a few times now, now working on levelling my torchic up to blazekin. Don't know how effective my squad is really as far as online is concerned. No idea about the hidden powers still either. Although im not sure how much i want to get into that side, i really enjoyed the single player and the trading, however, ill just get annoyed with the competitive side, theres only so many spare hours/mins i have in the afternoon after work, running etc theres always going to be people with far to much time on their hands to obliterate people online.

Overall loved the game from start to finish, its well thought out, looks good (slowdown aside) and just just as addictive as ever. The online is brilliantly integrated too, with you and your friends always connected and able to trade, battle or even talk voice to voice, which must be a first for the 3ds. Big well done to game freak and nintendo from me and ill be trading for a while yet i should expect.

This might be the generation I get into online seeing as how EV training seems to be easier, though i've yet to actually try the training option on the game. Fishbowl is right though, considering how long it took me in Black to chain breed a Scizor with egg moves and the right nature for use in the battle towers makes me shudder at how long it will take to get a team of fully EV trained lvl 100 beasts with the right natures and move sets!

Speedy - is there a list somewhere of what is out of bounds for this generation's ranked battles? A list of illegal moves and items etc?

Too early to tell right now really.

Here's a list of banned Pok?mon from last generation though.

Notice the Blaziken with the Speed Boost ability being classed as Uber? Hehe. I think that the ranked battles in game only ban legendaries though - and perhaps Wobbuffet.

Also worth noting that you don't really need to raise you Pok?mon to level 100 as they'll be knocked back to 50 for online battles. Also with Super Training and vitamins to give that base of 100 EVs for two stats I EV trained my Salamence in 20 minutes. Super Training is crazy!

Online ranked matches only ban 'Special Pokemon' so no Yveltal, no Mewtwo. Mimimimimimimi

I'm beginning to think the previous three wins in a row were just a complete fluke, and I think I'm giving up battling online on this already.

I just don't understand how to put together a team of 3 that covers all angles, and no matter what I bring someone seems to have a perfectly set up counter for it, to the point where they can spam a single move and my entire team goes down (Usually earthquake, or Gengar with that shadow blob thing). I build around these weaknesses and then I get a Talonflame with priority Brave Bird, or a Mega Gengar, or a defensive wall that just can't be downed and recovers full health faster than I can damage it, and I'm ****ed again.

I've spent 1200 hours on Dota 2, and many more hours on League of Legends in the past, I've played Dark Souls and almost finished it, but NOTHING comes close to the absolute system-breaking frustration of playing this online and losing to a single move being spammed repeatedly despite perfectly trained pokemon.

I think I'll just stick to the breeding, wonder trading and filling out the pokedex, any game that frustrates me to this degree isn't worth persisting in so I'm done with the battling.

Its infuriating the online battling, as you said, people just spam you with moves you don't even think are that good, and bam! its super effective and your pokemon is 1hko'd. Also how htf can people have defensive walls and regenerating health? ive never encountered that before.
