Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes review

    Well this is just lovely

Obviously I'm gonna start with the graphics as it's a MGS game. I'm on the Xbox One version and it runs very nice. The textures are of high detail and everything is shiny, also they remembered to add colour into this game unlike MGS4. The frame rate is flawless and really adds to the gameplay, it's a solid 60 FPS, I spun the camera round in intense moments and it handled it no problem with no dip in frame rate, the fox engine is really being put to good use in the next gen version. I don't even think the Xbox version is meant to be 1080p but it look very sharp.

The sound has been beefed up too. I love shooting the machine guns and hearing the shells hit the ground. The new Snake voice is going to take some getting used to though, he just doesn't sound as hard as he used to.

There's some very welcome gameplay additions to this game. Like when you're aiming at an enemy and you get seen it switches to bullet time giving you time to aim your shots better while moving out of the way. Also it doesn't seem to be as complicated as MGS4, if anything it's been toned down on what you can do to keep it simple. No more time limits when you have been seen, CQC has been greatly improved showing symbols of what you can do when you grab someone so you never forget what to do and how to do it. It all just flows so well.

Off to play some more but will add more impressions later.

What's there is excellent, well worthy of 9/10. The problem is that there really is so little of it.

The main mission should take most people one evening, or about 2 hours tops on first play through. Replays will see that reduce to 30 minutes or so. So in that sense, this is like a demo.

However, the real value comes after you complete it, because you unlock the SideOps missions. This adds to the length of the overall package massively, and you can also track down all the remaining cassettes etc.

So the game is worth buying... just. Go into it knowing that this is a short-lived experience, don't pay more than ?20 for it, and don't expect to be still playing this after the weekend. But what is actually here is great, the most graphically impressive game I've played on the PS4 so far, and serves the purpose of leaving you gagging for Phantom Pain.

It took me 2 hours 30 minutes to do the main mission and everything about it was glorious. Really is a stunning game.

It is definitely quality over quantity but man, what quality! The game is fantastically designed, you are given an open world and a fantastic amount of options to get through it. This is the best kind of play, undirected free form expression. Outside of an objective you are free to act and complete it as you wish. No one is guiding you or forcing you to do things, you are given a sandbox and freedom to learn it. As you sneak through the camp you learn enemy patrols, you interrogate enemies to get ammo, weapons and collectables marked on the map, you plan points of attack and escape routes. You constantly learn about the world and systems by observation and experimentation. When it comes time to act, you know the layout of the base and enemy positions which enables you to devise a plan and put it into action.

The best games are ones that let you teach yourself the game systems by giving you room to experiment and then force you to constantly make tough decisions. Do you swap this gun for that gun? Can you make it across this yard without being spotted? Do I interrogate this guy and risk his friend coming round the corner or do I just kill him and stay hidden? The player is making these constantly and it is the definition of fun.

I had a great first run.

As I crept through the base I planted C4 on the anti air guns and did some awesome sneaking. When it came time to get Chico out I fluffed the stealth and had a great gun battle round the prison. As it kicked off, I detonated all the C4 to make sure the guns were out of action so I had free reign to call down a chopper where I wanted. After I extracted him, I stealthed to Paz and then bombed it out of the camp using a jeep. No set pieces, no hand holding, just my own actions put into effect in a world that supports the player poking at it and maintains a consistent simulation.

This is an amazing game and can't wait to play through the side ops. Roll on Phantom Pain!

Sounded like a fun way of getting through it chopemon. I don't mind this being short as there's so many ways of getting through it.

Does killing the enemy but without being seen go against your rating? I always feel like killing the enemy is wrong in a MGS game but I suppose it doesn't matter if you do it unseen and hide the body.

This is very short, but very sweet, looks amazing as expected, took me 72 minutes on first play through, totally enjoyed it and will try some of the unlocked side missions now.

MM - you get marked down (lose) points for enemy kills so yes I guess so.

Really enjoying this first things I noticed was weather effects unreal. Graphics engine so good at lighting. Fox Engine is really something. Animation transitions with Snake are much smoother than previous games. Cutscenes are near seamless with gameplay.

Seems to have so many nuance controls that are not shown and you have to find out about like leaping off objects. How do you roll while in the floor? Can it be done?

Regards to the missions. So many different ways to complete missions the main game for example I drove the truck out of the compound with Paz, the landing zone was hot, chopper taking fire was really fun and tense got her on the chopper and was shooting trucks and men as it took off taking damage. But seen/heard at least 5 other different ways to get her out. Plus finding Chico has a few different things too. So many different ways to play. The guard A.I too is brilliant when they search for you and very well balanced.

Japanese language option is great, glad I can change the language hope this makes it into MGSV:Phantom Pain.

Really loving the soundtrack to this. Game mechanics seem really stable, no tapping on walls, or codec though which I miss, hoping codec especially returns. Get the impression Kojima has streamlined all the controls and weapon selection getting rid of the map plus vision cones to add more atmosphere in line with more recent action games like Assassins Creed IV.

App works well looking iDroid and map plus play music in game through it. It is really awesome looking at Mother Base, the Mission map etc.

Install of min 4GB quite big I thought. Also ?23 for me so quite cheap.

JU! you roll be holding L2 and left or right on the left stick, takes a bit of doing until you're used to it.

Played through it three times now, best time of about 18 minutes. Is actually quite tricky when you try and rush through without being spotted/shot.

Cheers for that was annoying me so much tried every button. Combo under the sun. Search the internet game Manual no sign of how to do it.

I'm gonna try normal again also hard mode too and rank up too as only got Rank B on Normal on main mission to begins with. Seems lots of unlockables to get.

62 minutes to clear the main section. Guessing I didn't spend long enough being stealthy!

Utterly gorgeous, as others have said the lighting and weather is phenomenal to behold.

Hoping that some of the voice samples are improved for PP though as some if Kiefer's lines are really muffled.

Done a couple of side missions too which show off the time of day effects nicely.

Not sure I can be bothered to pick this up yet. I figure wait a few weeks and get it even cheaper? Is it going to have any DLC or any point in keeping the disc past a few playthroughs?

I wondered about DLC too, as the main game is probably 18 months away it must be a possibility.

I've completed all the side missions now and don't really see much replay value in it for me.

Shame there isn't a Jeep driving time trial or something.
