Eddhewett: Good point. That's one of the things you quickly forget about most FF games - the way they spike in difficulty...
Try playing the PAL version in Widescreen. Thank **** for the Cinema mode on my TV... (which ditches the borders by expanding the lines enough to cut off the top and bottom of the screen. Useless for anything but early DVDs and PAL Square games)

The gameplay in FF X-2 is radically different from FF X, actually. Square decided the new combat system in FF X wasn't as good as they said it was, so they went back to their trusty old ATB system for FF X-2. As for the "dresspheres" (clothing changes), it's actually the exact same as the job change system in FF 5, except that you can change classes during combat too. Which happens through absolutely ridiculous and full of fan service Sailor Moon-style transformation sequences. When I first saw that I knew I wasn't gonna play this one either. There's a limit to how far my suspension of disbelief can go.

Indeed, a couple leaves were lifted from grandia's book in the design of FFX-2's combat, but there are little niggling flaws - there's a combo system that doesn't always work with some moves delaying animations unfairly and little explaination or remedy is given for the status effects that force and prohibit dress sphere changes. Mastered spheres also show litte advantage other than a full complement of abilities, unlike other job systems that allowed you to migrate mastered abilities between jobs. Some garment grids go some way to redressign the balance, but not all the way.
However the system otherwise works well - achieving balance in each team is satisfying to juggle around with, particularly later on when more abilities open up and the game becomes more flexible in that respect. Dress changes make for nice eye-candy in the absence of summons but advanced play necessitates that these change scenes be turned off later on to avoid insanity.
A mixed bag of plusses and minuses, then.

FF9 was quite poor in my opinion. I got to about the 3rd disc, I saw teh amazing cut scene where the wings come over the castle and protect it from a dragon or something. That was stunning... Some of the characters were great like Vivi (gotta love those black mages) and some of the cut scenes created to explore characters were really good and added a lot to the game.
As expected it looked stunning and played like every other FF game... however it was really drawn out with very little progression over the other games. It had some good ideas, but was really more of the same drawn out monotonous bollocks... Worth a play, but don't expect anything special.
