Why cant the guy in the game say comfort? Its very off putting during the game when he shouts, "They are too close for comfawt". Very odd.

He's obvioulsy doing it phonetically. I love the way he says 'rookies', which he pronounces as 'Roooooo-keys'.

I never noticed that, I am going to have to play it again.

Is it worth my while picking up any of the other RR games, and which ones in particular?

Ridge Racer Revolution is definitely worth getting (especially if you can get a linkup going). It has the best Ridge soundtrack ever, incredibly bright vibrant graphics and a good spread of 3 courses (the Expert version is incredibly demanding with a lot of sharp corners and extremely narrow roads but is one of the most exhilerating racing experiences I've ever had).

If you ever come across the arcade machine of Rave Racer (sadly never converted to a home format) then give that a try. You won't be disappointed.

Quite simply - there are 2 different schools of Ridge Racer fans.

Those who preferred the direction Rage and RR4 took - racing teams, a story, loads of cars to win etc. etc.

Those who prefer the 'purity' of the original 'arcade-style'.

The former of those don't like RR5 - the latter love it - and I'm in the latter.

IMO RR5 looks OK (2 player is VERY foggy tho) and plays like a 'proper' arcade game - isn't unduly complex and allows you to see places in Ridge City which the previous games only hinted existed - and that's good for me.

I really didn't like RR4 much - the idea that you have to not only win but get 2nd, 3rd and 4th in every combination for every series to win every car is just BONKERS

So guys, assuming that I get my PS2 chipped (which I will) and pick up this game (which I will), should I go for the Jap or US version? Has either version got any differences, or am I just paying for the english menus?

Yeah, that was incredibly dumb. You had to force yourself to drive slowly if you wanted to unlock the lower spec cars which felt somewhat odd.

Persoanlly I think Namco dropped the ball with the series for Rage Racer and Type 4. However, that opinion only comes when viewing the games retrospectively, with the benefit of hindsight (similar to how I NOW lambast Final Fantasy 8 ) but I still played them quite a bit on original release.

There's very, very little Japanese text in the game. In fact, off the top of my head, the only time there is any would might need is when you win a race and there is some text telling you your team's standing. As all this info is available in other screens anyway, it's totally negligable. I have Jpn copy, and I'd say 95% of the text and menus are in English.
