ore recently, when I put the 10th frag in the forehead of Xaero, I've spent a full afternoon trying...
He's so easy on Nightmare, its the easiest level! Simply hide at one side with the railgun, keep popping out and shooting, and you'll win easily. Move out of them blocks, and you're dead.

Mine'd have to be when I completed Facility in under 1:45 on 00Agent. How hard was that!? But it was so satisfying

On that note, there's a Goldeneye appreciate article going up soon ^_^

Oh, also Quackshot on the Megadrive. How hard was that game!?

Not very. I don't recall it being hard. I rememeber it was a massive let down after Castle of Illusion though.

Yep, and in the case of OOT's Ganon as well. First time I got to him, I hadn't seen *any* spoilers so I really did think the collapse of the casle was the end of the game. Then, oh look at that, some hench mutha****a with two bigass swords rises up into the sky, against a backdrop of lightning. AARGH.

I totally forgot about the z-lock and pegged it in circles for about 5 mins, with just the thing's swords visible to the left and right of the screen as he chased after me. Turned it off then, I had the jitters.

Turns out he wasn't actually that hard. And the end sequence gave me The Feeling as described by Ady, so it's all good. The only other boss I can remember making me physically shake - to the point where I had to turn the console off - was the first boss of Starfox. But I was quite young, okay?

Whilst I don't get nervous during end boss encoutners, this reminds me of the first time I did Starfox 64 on hard mode.

I polished of Andross' second form and breathed a sigh of relief as he finally went down.

"Yeah, I've done it!" I thought.

I then realised I had to negotiate the corridoors to escape the ship before it exploded. As I only had a tiny sliver of health left, I was pretty shaky at this point (as you can well imagine). Andross wasn't really hard, but I didn't relish doing it all over again if I died.

Fortunately, I didn't. My little Arwing zipped out of the hatch before the explosion and I jumped up and started shouting the house down in elation.

I can't imagine what the neighbours thought.

I'm with 60-hz, although for me it was being the first person I knew of who completed SSF2T in the arcade, with a group of people I didn't know around the machine watching. Awesome.

It wasn't the last time, just the best. Putting Viewtiful Joe to bed will be the next time, oh yes.

Just last night I had a quick go on Super Mario Bros 3 on the GBA SP - I'd only really played it a bit on Mario Allstars on the SNES and like once on the NES at some boy's house. And I had that moment after almost every level I completed in World 8... I mean bloody hell, have they changed him or was the little fat fecker always so slippery? I guess it gives him a sense of inertia and weight - like that which was in Mario 64 but no Mario Sunshine (although I swear Mario World wasn't like this but was still fun :P) but I just land on a turret and go flying off into the abyss and die. :/ Anyway, getting past all that was satisfying, although the game's not finished just yet.

Nope, he's always been that slippery.

That's why I couldn't really get on with 2D Mario. The over-zealous inertia dicked me off too much.

                        - Finally being able to pull off the dragon punch with ease was a mjor achievment for me back in the day.

                        - completing mario kart on the snes on 150cc was a nightmare at the time, especially that rainbow road!

                        - finishing splinters cell PT.

                        - destroying dural on evo for the first time was great!

                        - clocking shenmue was great and sad at the same time.

                        - leveling up enough to kill any boss in an RPG is always satisfying.

                        - Finishing golden eye was an achievment in itself i tell yah!

                          Silent Hill 3.

I was up against it big-time on the final encounter, I hardly had any ammo or health left and ended having to resort to using the hammer I think it was, took ages before she croaked it, but I was quite pleased with myself with that one.

I think I know the feeling that you are talking about Ady.

It doesn't matter which boss it is, some troublesome character midway through (the Rock Monster in Metroid Prime gave me some real **** that had me shaking and my heart pounding) or the ultimate end of game showdown boss. Through most of a game you can be pretty confident that most encounters wont kill you, you spend time honing your skills and get enjoyment from combos and point scoring. Then somebody steps up that is actually a challenge. It kind of throws you at first. You take them on and get a beating and its like "right you punk, now its on!!". It kind of gets personal, as if how dare they have the audacity to challenge you, somebody who has been owning everything and everyone they have met so far. Some bosses have me shouting at the screen (VJ's Fire Leo got cussed out something chronic when I finally took him down) and some have me feeling relief that I have made it past them (second boss in Ikaruga). The best bosses leave me with a mix of celebratory victory, relief and pure adrenaline rush.

Nice thread by the way, good to discuss the heart of the gaming experience.

Oh yeah, I've got to add doing the Aztec level in Goldeneye's 007 Agent mode.

The last fews minutes of that level are tense. Crossing the control room, not knowing when or if you're going to get sniped by a Moonraker laser, culminating in you defending yourself before the rocket takes off. Those seconds feel like MINUTES.

Beating that was the highlight of my entire week.
