i read through the thread on the BBB forums and have not laughed so much in a very long while.
Since when did a game getting a good score (admittedly only from IGN) and suddenly Peter M lied to them for four years and the game is sheeeite, bearing in mind not ONE of them has actually played it.
    Pure comedy genius.
If you read the forums you would think the game was rubbish, now i am looking forward to fable it sounds interesting, danny elfman is doing the music, it looks nice and looks reasonably free form in its design it will not be the greatest game ever it will not be perfect and i'm not expecting it to be, as long as its fun i'll be happy.

    lol still makes me chuckle

you can imagine the same thing for halo 2

OMG there is no pink coloured masterchief!
    Bungie lied to us
there is a multiplayer level that was in the preview but not in the full game, they've lost a customer!

gamers sometimes take things a little too seriously

Ah but it's not the score that's got them flapping like a colony of distressed penguins is it? - it's the revelations in the text.

Their main grievance seems to stem from the fact that another one of Pete's much publicised ideas that was going to make Fable the 'Greatest RPG Ever' hasn't made it after all.Namely the way in which your character would compete for fame and notoriety with other would-be-heroes and heroines.Or at least, the way in which it's now implemented is far removed from what they were led to believe.

Add to this the apparent short life-span of the game - 10>12 hours or less than 20 with almost everything done (for myself though that probably translates to at least 40 hours - I like to take my time.Thinking about it,I might even squeeze 60>80 hours from it.I really do love soaking up every last detail.) and the fact that optional quests cannot be failed (do so and you must start again - progress in the quests cant be saved although xp etc can) which means that there is only one way to complete them - it was expected that you could allow your character to fail and have to live with the consequences to your reputation and character development but that cant happen now.

Then theres the lack of challenge commented upon - it seems, especially with the inclusion of health potions and healing spells it's actually very difficult to be defeated. This is the only element that I will be dissapointed in if true.I'm thinkng that maybe this has been over-exaggerated.Im hoping so.It's my biggest complaint with games in general - most present little challenge.RPG's especially.

Personally though Im just going to enjoy it for what it is. I usually prefer more conventional RPG's/SRPG'S rather than adventure games with RPG elements such as Zelda but with the US release of several more traditional 'Role-play' games this month including Star Ocean 3,Shadow Hearts 2 (Ive played JP versions of both of these and loved them - superb games i thought, especially SH2)and Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne it'l provide a welcome break from countless random encounters and complicated stat juggling. As long as its not another 'Sudeki' (though it seems to bear some superficial similarities) then I'll be content.

9.3 from IGN and they're complaining? What were they expecting?
Problem is that IGN is overly generous when they give out scores... especially when it's 9.x. They are too lenient for big games.

I've found that when IGN gives a score, scratch off 2.0 and you get the real score. Or if that brings it down to low, scratch of 20% of the final score, and you get something more reasonable.

Just read the IGN review and its helped to increase my anticipation. A surprisingly good review that helped me learn more about the game. All in all, looking forward to this one.

Adam, while your waiting for Fable, make sure you check out Knights of he old Republic. Seriously, im pretty sure you'll love it, being the RPG freak that you are ;P

If you own an Xbox, enjoy RPGs, and don't own KOTOR, there is no hope for you.

Reading betweem the hyperbolic scribblings from IGN and TeamXbox it is apparent that Mr. Molyneux has once again talked the talk then predictably stumbled and fell flat on his face without so much as an apology to all those he injected with anticipation prior to actually making the game.....

But, also in those reviews there is enough to suggest, although well short of expectation, there is a good game with a whole host of things not normally found in games of this type.

I for one will give it a go and if it takes till Christmas I intend to find a barrel of apples, one of which has a worm in it!

Ive had my eye on the game for years now. Ive not got huge expectations but the ability to wander about a bit, go exploring and actually feel as if the game world is passing you by would be nice.

If the game delivers 50% of what was promised I will be happy.

Well as long as its the good 50%.

I had forgotten why I stopped taking IGN's reviews seriously. Then I read their review of Fable. The score they gave the game is blatantly inflated when compared to the text of the review.

The actual review itself makes the game sound like an 8.5, and that's being generous. More believably a solid 8.0 effort. The number of flaws and strengths are about equal, but still fun and inspired over-all.

Bearing in mind that these are American scoring standards. So a 7.5 is considered "average."

By no means is there a 9.3 worthy game mentioned anywhere in the author's review of Fable. I for one am most dissapointed by the reports of short length, easy difficulty, and an on-rails feel to what was supposed to be a very open ended adventure.

Fable (atleast in my mind) was to be a more focused, more polished, less nihilistic Morrowind killer with a sense of humor. As it turns out, 3+ years of work have managed to produce a charming but brief action/rpg with some nifty ideas and a lobotomized difficulty level. That Bioware was able to produce the epic KotOR in a fraction of the time it has taken for Fable to go gold is ridiculous.

I agree with your points that IGN's review text clearly contradicts the score, but let's give Fable a chance first. As games technologically and artistically progress, so does the subjectivity each of us takes to them.

Like Shenmue for example, I have a feeling Fable isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. We'll just have to see when people start providing their opinions in a first play thread hopefully soon.

Hopefully the framerate will be not as bad as in 'Deus Ex - Invisible War' (or even KotoR, especially on the last planet).

The hype surrounding Fable? admittedly mostly created by the developers themselves? is probably the game?s biggest blemish. More for the fact it promised so much and only delivered a fraction of which it swore. This is why I can understand why there?re a lot of individuals expression their disappointments, even before getting their hands on the games themselves.

However I don?t see it like that. The developers initially tried to produce something that would reach new heights but sadly fell short. However im sure there is an undoubtedly bold, intriguing and ultimately fun game to be had here - so there is no way im going to bitch about it ? at least not before I play it for myself. That?s just my take on the situation Anyhoo

Fable (and Halo 2) is the game that finally persuaded me to purchase an Xbox and im looking forward to seeing how it has turned out. As described before, I?m really not expecting ?the greatest RPG ever? but am expecting to have a hell of a time playing around with the morality, being able to see my hero change to reflect my personality and generally get engrossed in the world of Fable, and simply running around 'doing stuff'. Having fun with the world of Fable...

Im even looking forward to the smaller things such as being able to read and learn about the many aspects of the world such as the weapons, armor and tattoos? And kicking chickens... or running around naked seeing the reactions...

All in all, promises, reviews, disappointments aside? I personally am looking forward to this very much so.

                              earlier i said
it promised so much and only delivered a fraction of which it swore...
It is this mere 'fraction' that has me so excited. Roll on its release!

                              Kind regards
                              Adam

You should read their review of Super Mario Sunshine. They pointed out so many things wrong with it (BIG things, such as camera), to the point I wouldn't have played it. Yet they gave it a 9.4.
