    Ridge Racer DS

Your trusted source for video game news, reviews and guides, since 1999.

Obviously didn't know what to do with the bottom screen, someone's posted on the eurogamer forum that it may be contolled by the Stylus thingy on the steering wheel, surely not, and if so, what about accelerate and brake ?

Graphics not exactly outstanding are they.

Looks very messy both visually and control wise. It wouldn't be so bad if you 'rotated' the 'wheel' with your finger on the bottom screen, but i'm sure i read that you have to basically draw lines across the screen and the length depends on how much you want to turn

Great idea, but really does look like skank.

Thats not a looker at all. Id agree that the idea looks to be quite good though but inevitably people are going to put the DS and PSP versions side by side in comparison even if they are totally different games.

I'm sure it will be a good game, but they could aim higher than RR64 graphics. The DS can do a bit better, as demonstrated by that 'Asphalt' game:

Much better detail there. Hopefully they'll make RRDS visuals closer to this.

As for the touchscreen steering-wheel... I don't think it's necessary. The PS1-2 have loads of d-pad controlled driving games which work fine.

I reckon this will always be the problem with conventional driving games on DS... there is simply no need for DS's features in genres which are already fully-formed on 'single screen and buttons' hardware. When this is the case, it's far better to ignore the second screen altogether, or stick a map on it, than include dubious 'touchscreen control' just to show it's being used. There are other ways conventional driving games can take advantage of the DS - wireless multiplayer being one.

That does look not bad at all. I can well imagine that being quite nice when it's all flashing past you.

And the stylus idea seems grand too - analogue control with the stylus with your left hand and brake/acc. with your right hand on the buttons!

I'm not a Nintendo fanboy at all - nearly everything they've released lately apart from M&L:SS has been rather tepid.

Apparantly you can control the wheel with a sort of pad that sticks underneath your thumb and it's not too bad at all. Surprisngly, it would appear that the game with the biggest control issue (according to the guy who went out to Seattle to play it) is Super Mario Ds, which also has quite a few camera issues. the mini games are supposed to be superb though.

Looks absolutely ****ing ****. Im sorry, it just does. After seeing the Mario 64 post the other day and now this, ive been well and truly put off the idea of getting a DS.

It looks completely awful compared to the PSP Ridge Racer game.

So what if it doesn't look as great as the PSP version? Surely, as long as it plays great, that's the most important thing?

I thought this would have been one of the last sites to praise aesthetics over gameplay... you all sound like a bunch of Sony fanboys

The problem I have with the DS is that everything 3D I've seen so far looks pretty poor (it doesn't help when you compare it to the PSP either) but the 2D stuff looks really sharp compared to the GBA. I would have been happy if they just remade the GBA SP with higher res, sharper screen, faster processor and built in wireless and continued making 2D games for it. I really don't care for the whole 3D thing at all.

...oh and also change the d pad for one of those NGPC stick things. Perfection

it would snap off when you stuck it in your pocket and be plaged even worse with that sweat collection cavity that the stick sits in, pocket fluff and crumbs and all sorts of crap in your pocket would get jammed in it mmm nice

How would the thing snap off - it was hardly sticking out on the NGPC and I would hope if you put it on an SP it would kinda push in so you could close it, meaning you don't have to worry about fluff, crums etc. Anyway I don't really care if its not exactly the same in look, just as long as it feels as nice as that thing.

I still think I'm going to get a DS but only for Zoo Keeper and the Pokemon games atm

Ugh .. The DS has horrid 3D abilities - its all ****ty software rendered stuff like the NGage by the looks of it.
