Ignorant Hypocrites - a topic of sorrow

As some of you already know I work for a games retailer in Leeds. I have done for four years in various capacities and have never had a problem with it, in fact I often love my job. Yesterday however things reached boiling point and I had to get out.

There were two factors that were already winding me up. The first was that I'd had only one day off that week and was starting to get a little tired. The second was that every other customer was making one of two transactions:-

    1. Trading Fifa 2005 for Pro Evo 4. It winds me up so much that there are thousands of "gamers" out there who are such sheep. They buy a crap football game, play it for a week and swap it for a game that is only marginally different. I don't like football games but I have nothing against people playing them, what I do hate is that their horizons are so narrow that they willl play nothing but footy games or the occasional golf game. I feel like I'm not even working in a games shop at all. I just sell unimaginative sports simulations. What makes it worse is that when I try to educate people to the glories of (what I would call) real games I get transaction 2.

    2. I managed to sell a LOT of copies of OutRun2 a few weeks ago, more so than most shops in my region because I was actually reccomending it to customers and explaining why it was fun to play. Predictably most of the copies that were sold were returned within the next couple of weeks. Customers called it "boring" and claimed not to like it for stupid reasons like not racing against opponents, not racing on a curcuit and most infuriating of all not being able to modify or "tune" the cars. They just didn't get it.

I have never felt so alienated from other gamers than I have this week. It's like we have two different hobbies that are worlds apart but only connected in that we use the same equipment to indulge in them. I was starting to get quite upset with my role and then the following happened:

A family came to trade some GBA games in for the kids. The children were sound and the dad seemed pretty clued up but the mum was an ignorant bile-spitting witch. Before I had even said hello she launched into a tirade on how all games should be banned because they turn youngsters into maladjusted citizens who are unable to relate to anyone else and become reclusive zombies. My blood was boiling, I replied jokingly that only bad games should be banned and she said that they all should because none of them have any value or worth at all, then went on (get this) to point at Yoshi's Island and refer to it as pulp trash.

I snapped, refused to serve her or anyone else ever again. I spent the rest of the day (about 4 hours) working in the stock room, cleaning the kitchen and doing window displays. I eventually calmed down but I'm now convinced that I'm working in the wrong job. I can't take anyone else devaluing the things I love anymore.

    Thanks for reading,

    Ash

I know that you're supposed to be polite to customers, so I'd just politely ask if she gives the same 'helpful' information to Blockbuster staff about films, or goes into newsagents purely to point out what a pile of bile-spilling, ill-researched **** the Daily Mail is. For an encore, the nearest Land Rover dealership is open for all that feel SUVs should be outlawed; its staff are awaiting your calls.

probably for all those reasons above i would never work in a high street games retailer

i love all games but i love most games from the 16bit (24bit neo) era and when i speak to my cousins who love all that is EA it winds me up because they cant see past the graphics

now imagine if i had to take that all day from spoilt brats i dont know - eek i dont know what i would do

another thing is that all retailers get told by the powers at be what items should be sold and my console of choice is the gamecube (of next gen systems) and no shops plug that system any more

sure its up a little bit right now but when donkey konga fever dips it will be back to normal

i would feel like a hypocrite selling everything else except the stuff i love most

i buy most of my pal games from here, i import mostly and thats because i hate Game, if i have to buy a Uk game, it normally comes from Play or from an independant retailer in Hamilton

FFS man, why would anyone let **** like that get to them.

I recognise that the majority of people are clueless when coming to games and have worked in retail before so I know it's soul destroying but sulking for 4 hours?

I'm not quite getting your point on this one, though. Man trades crap game for better one in the same genre. So? He's a sensible bloke (apart from the buying Fifa in the first place). How many people trade last year's version of a franchise in for this year's? It must be tons; with most of these yearly update games there is little reason to ever go back to an older version, so why keep it?

Go look at the trading threads in this very forum, what is the most popular game being sold at the moment? Seems like your customers are not alone in their buying/trading habits.

Ash: Gaming's not how it used to be. We're on the same level as the millions of people who went to see Matrix Revolutions and proclaimed it genius/rubbish in a trawl of snap judgements. Just be aware that there are still people out there who care - and we've got to buy our games somehow.

Who knows, next week a really hot person might come in and give you a smacker for pushing Outrun 2 at them!

                  Hey Tom,

Don't you mean "Welcome to the UK games retail industry"?

That's my point Mid. There was only one week between Fifa and Pro Evo. Why can't the dick-heads just wait for one week and only buy the game they know they'll enjoy.

                      Yes Valken, I do

I worked in Toys R Us for a few months, pimping the games. Oh deary dear me. That was quite terrible.

I worked part time in retail and later, support while I was in college and it's a massive pain in the arse.

I used to be amazed at how people just left their common sense at the door or before they picked up the phone but you get over that pretty quickly.

If you've been in the games retail trade for 4 years one would expect you'd either be used to it by now or working elsewhere.

Surely you only work there for the money and the discount. I say just ignore the customers.

When I worked at Blockies people would buy whatever games I told them too....

                            Baaa-aaa!

You only have to vaguely look like you know what you're talking about...

Yoshi's Island is about a paedophile dinosaur abducting our precious children!

                              Probably...
