A sequel to Sin was in the works until a few months ago, but it got canned.

And I heard some rumors that the Xbox Next line-up may include a Shadowrun game, which given that I'm a huge fan of the roleplaying game, made me *very* happy (the SNES version was horrible, though -- the Megadrive one was slightly better but still nothing to write home about).

Well... My opinion probably has to do with my background. No offense, but I gather you never played the Shadowrun pen-and-paper roleplaying game, right? I've been a regular player for more than 5 years, and that's probably the problem. The console adaptations are bad not (only) because of what they are, but of what they could be, of wasted potential.

The SNES game, despite some good music and slightly better graphics than the Megadrive version (although they were still ugly by SNES standards, and the Megadrive rendition of the Matrix was quite nice to look at), makes one wonder why it even bears the Shadowrun name.

Most of the features of the universe (perhaps the most complex, detailed and interesting game worlds I've ever played in) are completely ignored in order to create a sub-par adventure game, with tedious puzzles, no plot worth mentioning and zero-dimensional characters you can't be arsed to care about -- that is, when you don't outright laugh at them in disbelief. I walked into the bar and talked to some random ork (which looks like he's been ripped straight out of Warhammer -- apparently someone forgot to tell the "artist" that orks are *not* green in Shadowrun, but I digress)... And then he told me "Wanna run the shadows with me? 2000 nuyen!" Great news: shadowrunners -- elite professional criminals -- now advertise themselves worse than crack whores.

Onto this they bolted a dull, clunky combat engine in which your chances of victory are solely determined by your ability to hammer the A button. And which not only disregards the original game system (I'm not an ayatollah, I can do with that), but also goes against the very nature of what Shadowrun is supposed to feel like -- namely, dark, gritty and realistic. Hit points and magic points, for Ghost's sake -- did they even know what game they were working on? At some point I even expected to see a "Level" stat... I won't even mention the Matrix, which is a straight rip off the HP48's Minehunt game.

And then there's the main character himself, who all by himself manages to personify every single thing that is wrong with that game.
Actually, when playing P&P Shadowrun, I tend to refer to "power trip" characters who blatantly break every rule in the book without even trying to hide it as "Armitages". The man has more cyberware than most street samurai, yet casts powerful spells like he's Gandalf.

Megadrive Shadowrun at least tried to pretend that it cared about what it was based on. Now, it looked ugly, sounded atrocious (let's go through this again, guys -- rule #1: Do. Not. Use. Voice. Samples. On. The. Megadrive.), and had a plot so dull and generic it made me want to cry in my sleep (I've stopped counting the number of brothers killed by an Evil Corporation(TM) I've had to avenge a loooong time ago), but at least it respected the SR universe, and offered you some freedom of action. Too bad said freedom of action is so often used to insert another cartridge in the console or load another ROM in the emulator.

Let's hope the Xbox Next game (if it is more than just a rumor) will do the license the justice it deserves. Properly used, the Shadowrun universe could give birth to the best Deus Ex-style game ever. Yes, even better than what VtM Bloodlines promises to be.

Woof. I remember playing Shadowrun (and Cyberpunk 2020) rpgs.

Gosh, blast from the past. Were a touch too (cyber)goth, if I remember rightly.

Cyberpunk pretty much is Cybergoth. Punk in Cyberpunk really reflects the anarchy notion of it all, **** all to do with the 70's subculture

Cough but of course you knew that heh

These games did get released but just not on Japanese Megadrive format.

                      Sunset Riders
                      Viewpoint
                      Caliber 50

                      Mega Bomberman
                      Cadash

Whats funny is that they were all programmed in Japan....

                      Sonic Crackers
                      Power Drift

And would love to have seen on Saturn

                      Super Hang On

                      And on Dreamcast

                      Daytona USA 2

                      And on Playstation

Victory Lap - Ace Driver 2

Rave Racer would have been appalling on the PS1. I reckon the PS2 could get it running perfectly; lets hope Namco do another retro collection with more poweful 90's games.

That reminds me of a game Namco were going to port to the PS1.

Cyber Cycles: An arcade machine I played a lot at the WonderPark, it had great graphics for the time and was immensely entertaining.

If Namco do some 90's arcade retro packs, I will be very happy. 8)

                          I designed Bagman!

I also did some multiplayer work on SiN too. I'm not particulary proud of my work for that, but hey...I got to work with Levelord!

Planet Harrier (DC) - there was an edge preview on this, the sequel to Space Harrier. It was an Arcade game with a Dreamcast port to follow soon after.
I'm pretty sure it never saw the light of day.

                            B.C. - Looked good.

Sin (especially once patched) remains one of the best FPS's I've played so far.
And ctf_spry is the best CTF map ever.

Wasn't Kingpin 2 announced a couple of months ago? I was certainly surprised to hear it.

I didn't play very far in that game back in the day. I was very new to FPS at the time and found it too difficult. Must give it another go. I remember hearing the deathmatch was excellent.

I would have dearly loved to have seen Total Annihilation 2. But Chris Taylor had left the company after Core Contingency so it probably wouldn't have touched the original.

Here's hoping CT's new RTS revitalises a very tired genre indeed.
