Mario 64 - N64 vs DS

Had a go of it today and the control takes some getting used to on the stylus. Nowhere near as nice as the analogue stick on N64.
Visuals though, well, it's sharper obviously, but there's a scruffy look to it which I don't like. Someone compared it to how Mario 64 would look like on a PSX, and that's not a bad comparison. More polygons than a PSX could handle, but has the same messy look. N64 had edge anti-aliasing, bilinear texture filtering, and mip mapping. Couldn't quite push as many polys as DS, but in every other respect beats the DS hands down graphically.
DS will come into it's own with proper custom written DS games. Feel the Magic is a taster, and I suspect Warioware will be the killer app.

Still, I'd imagine that a lot of those titles will become reality.
The worrying thing is that I'd probably be quite happy with a DS re-make anyway... :S

The game is more pixelated, and lacks some of the N64's finer points, but they are basically the same.
Isn't the DS about 80% as powerful as an N64?
it is supposidly more powerful than the n64.
thing is, the PS1 could push quite a few more polys than the n64, but couldnt do any effects like the n64s edge anti-aliasing and bi-linear filtering.

I agree with you about the PS1 having more polygon power. Both machines had their strong points, the N64 at it's best definitely had nicer looking cleaner graphics.
I still have the impression that the DS isn't as powerful as a N64 from all the articles I have read, and I'm sure Edge said something once about it being a little short when it comes to matching the N64.
The DS is a great machine though, and the games will no doubt improve over the coming year or two.

And lets not forget the DS version is pushing 60fps to the n64 30fps so saying the DS is inferior isn`t being fair. With time i`m sure the technical ability of the DS will be super seeding the n64, i have no doubt about it. Also I was just wondering if the effects people mentioned the DS were missing from the n64 like filtering could be written in software at all?
